The Spartans Trump the Mountaineers with a 9-6 Victory on Tuesday Afternoon

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team won their first mid-week contest of the season 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon against Appalachian State.  

USC Upstate took a commanding lead with four runs in the first three innings compared to App State's one. Alyssa Houge pitched 4.1 innings allowing three hits and five runs but recording five strikeouts, until she was relieved by Alyssa Kelly who pitched 2.2 innings, surrendering three hits and two runs along with recording two strikeouts. App State posted four runs in the top of the fifth narrowing the score to just one run, but the Spartans were able to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth and finish out the top of the seventh.

How It Happened         

  • B1: Upstate got on the board after a double to right field from Tiffany Domingue sent Casey Goguts for the first time. 

  • T3: Kayt Houston hit a sacrificed fly out to right field, giving Emma Jones enough time to advance home from third. 

  • B3: With Madison Lanoux on third and Gogut on second Summer Johnson was able to extend the Spartans' lead by three runs with a home run over right center.  

  • B4: Despite grounding out to second base, Summer Johnson continued to be an asset to the Upstate offense as Domingue advanced to second, Goguts advanced to third, and Lanoux scored her second run of the day.  

  • B4: Goguts and Domingue rounded home plate making the score 7-1 with the help of a single from Peyton Darnell. 

  • T5: After walking to first, Addie Wray advanced home as Emma Jones hit a home run to center field. 

  • T5: Mary Pierce Barnes narrowed the Spartan lead to two runs as she hit a home run to left center, while Emily Parrott advanced home.  

  • B6: Alexa Sanchez recorded her second run of the season as she made the score 8-5 as Marisa Soterakis hit a single to right field.  

  • B6: Liza Simmerson was able to steal home as she subbed in to pinch run for Peyton Darnell on third. 

  • T7: Parrott scored the final run of the day as she reached home on a fielder's choice.  

   
Notable         

  • Casey Goguts recorded season highs with three hits and three runs. Goguts leads the Spartans with 35 total bases and ties Mady Lanoux for runs (14).  

  • Liza Simmerson scored her third run of the season while Alexa Sanchez recorded her second.  

  • Four Spartans have a slugging percentage over .500% (Casey Goguts .761, Peyton Darnel .700, Mady Lanoux .674, and Summer Johnson .667) 

  • The pitchers have averaged 7.97 strikeouts per seven innings and totaled 107 strikeouts in 94.0 inning this season after today's win (107).
