Spartanburg S.C. - USC Upstate looks to match up against South Carolina State before resuming Big South competitions with Campbell this weekend. Upstate is coming off two wins from its three-game series against Longwood.
The Spartans came out on top in the three-game series with the Lancers this past weekend as Longwood took game one on Friday with a 7-1 win. Upstate quickly rallied back winning 5-3 in game two and 2-0 in game three on Saturday.
Hannah Houge took the mound in games two and three in the series, adding two wins to her now 13-1 record this season. Houge pitched 7.0 innings on Friday, surrendering 11 hits, three runs, and one walk, and recording seven strikeouts. On Saturday, Houge pitched 7.0 innings and allowed seven hits but gave no runs and had nine strikeouts. Houge enters this week ranked fourth nationally for victories, eighth for shutouts and 20th for strikeouts.
Peyton Darnell hit her eighth home run of the season in game three of the series. Darnell has hit four homeruns in Upstate's last five games. Tiffany Domingue had an exceptional weekend as well as she recorded two runs, two hits, and two RBI. Bella Bertot started her first game this season as a catcher for the third game of the series. Bertot recorded one hit and one RBI for a .667 batting average while recording nine putouts and two assists.
S.C. State had the weekend to recoup following its four losses against St. Peters University. The Bulldogs fell to the Peacocks 8-2 and 11-0 in a double-header on Monday and 8-1 and 3-0 in a double-header on Tuesday.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate (20-2):
Mady Lanoux has been a consistent element to the Spartans thus far this season. Lanoux has started all 22 games for Upstate as the first baseman. Against Longwood, Lanoux recorded two runs, three hits, one double, one walk, and one stolen base on eight at bats. She finished the series with a .375 batting average, .444 on base percentage, and a .500 slugging percentage. Thus far this season, Lanoux leads Upstate with 22 runs, 33 hits, while boasting 15 RBI and 44 total bases, along with a .611 slugging percentage.
S.C. State (1-14):
De'Asia Lowther leads the Bulldogs for pitching and batting. Lowther claims S.C. State's one victory against Florida A&M after pitching 7.0 innings and recording five strikeouts. The sophomore sits at the top of the stats with a .400 batting average along with three runs, 12 hits, seven RBI, 21 total bases, and a .700 slugging percentage.
