Spartanburg S.C. - Upstate goes into the double-header with Furman following its series win over the reigning Big South Conference Champions, Campbell. The Spartans secured two wins on Saturday afternoon before falling on Sunday morning, improving their record to 24-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Game one brought a 4-2 victory for the Spartans as Alanna Deal secured the win with a double to bring home the game-winning run only to score a run of her own shortly after. Hannah Houge took the mound in game one of the series, surrendering five hits and two run in 7.0 innings and throwing double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season (11).
Game two began in a similar fashion as the game was scoreless until Campbell took the lead in the top of the third inning. Upstate responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the fifth, and an impressive seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. The game concluded with Sarah Price hitting her first career grand slam. Alyssa Kelly earned her eighth win this season as she pitched 6.0 innings, surrendering three hits and one run while striking out two batters.
Sunday morning, the Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after game three went scoreless for three innings. Tiffany Domingue and Casey Goguts were able to earn two runs but Campbell responded with one run in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh. Madison Lanoux was able to grit out of last run in for Upstate but with two outs already on the board, the Spartans came up short. Houge received her second loss of the season as she pitched 7.0 innings, surrendering six hits and six runs and recording nine strikeouts.
Furman is currently on a five-game losing streak after falling during a three-game series to UCF. The Paladins lost game one 8-0 in six innings, game two 8-4, and the final game on Sunday 9-0 in six innings. Furman is 1-6 on the road for the season.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate (24-3, 4-2 Big South):
Peyton Darnell has started all 27 games for Upstate with her primary starting position being the designated player. Darnell leads Upstate with a .747 slugging percentage after recording 11 runs, 24 hits, 10 home runs, 35 RBI and 56 total bases.
Furman (9-13, 0-0 SoCon):
Emily Barlett leads Furman in batting average (.321) and slugging percentage (.589). Barlett has started all 22 games for the Paladins, recording 12 runs, 18 hits, three home runs, 14 RBI and 33 total bases.
