Spartans Slug Their Way to a Three-Game Sweep of Radford Behind Home Runs From Peyton Darnell and Summer Johnson

Radford, Va. – Upstate finished the last of the three-game series with Radford with a 14-3 win in five innings, with two Spartans recording home runs and Alyssa Kelly earning her 10th win of the season. 

The Spartans took an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the first inning compared to the Highlanders' one. In the top of the third, Upstate put eight more runs on the board including a home run from Summer Johnson and a grand slam from Peyton Darnell. Celeste Delorenzo extended the lead for Upstate in the top of the fourth while Madison Lanoux added one more in the top of the fifth. Radford was able to earn two more runs with a home run from Barbato. Kelly threw 86 pitches across seven innings, along with six strikeouts while surrendering only three runs.

How It Happened               

  • T1: Tiffany Domingue hit a double to left field, allowing enough time for Mady Lanoux and Sarah Price to get home and give Upstate two runs early.  

  • T1: Casey Goguts hit a single to left which advanced Summer Johnson from second to third. Johnson reached home off an error from the Radford left fielder. 

  • T1: With the bases loaded, Marisa Soterakis was hit by a pitch advancing Alanna Deal to second, Celeste Delorenzo to third and Goguts home making the score 4-0 going into the bottom of the first.  

  • B1: Madison Canady hit a single to right field advancing Kyndall Stanley to third and sending Cori McMillian home to make the game 4-1 in favor of the Spartans. 

  • T3: Deal bunted to reach first and advanced to second on the throw as Celeste Delorenzo moved to third and Johnson scored.  

  • T3: Soterakis grounded out to the shortstop which gave Delorenzo enough time to reach home.  

  • T3: For the second time, the Spartans had the bases loaded as Domingue stepped up to bat. Domingue was hit by the pitch advancing Lanoux to second, Price to third, and Deal to home.  

  • T3: Peyton Darnell stepped up to bat and hit a home run over the left field wall, bringing home Lanoux, Price, and Domingue home with her. 

  • T3: In a similar fashion, Summer Johnson stepped up to close out the top of the third with a home run over the center field wall to make the game 12-1.  

  • T4: Delorenzo extended the Spartans' lead as she earned a run as Soterakis grounded out to the Radford shortstop.  

  • T5: Mady Lanoux scored Upstate's final run as she reached home off a sacrificed fly from Olivia Hall.  

  • B5: Barbato helped Radford get its final runs as her home run to right center brought home Emily Smith.  

     
Notable               

  • Tiffany Domingue has recorded at least one hit in the last four games Upstate has played; she has also recorded three runs in the last three games.  

  • Peyton Darnell has now surpassed her career-high of 10 home runs (2021), earning her 11th home run of the season today. The home run also extended her lead of total bases to 68.  

  • Sarah Price continues to lead Upstate in stolen bases (19).  

  • Today's match was the first time this season that all three catchers saw playing time in one game.  

  • This is Upstate's first 3-0 series win of the season.

Upstate will next take on East Tennessee State in a double-header on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Cyrill Softball Stadium.
