Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep Behind a Pair of Shutout Victories over East Tennessee State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartans continued to improve their record on the season as they swept East Tennessee State with a double shutout at Cyrill Stadium. The last back-to-back shutout Upstate recorded was March 5th as Hannah Houge had a 2-hit complete shutout against Bethune-Cookman and Alyssa Kelly threw a 2-hit complete shutout against Stetson. 

Game one was deadlocked for the first five innings as Hannah Houge struck out seven batters swinging and four looking. Upstate was able to get on the board as Celeste Delorenzo hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Upstate its four runs of the game. The grand slam was the first grand slam of Delorenzo's career, while being the second grand slam in two games. Houge recorded her 18th win of the season as well as her 15th complete game of the season with the 12 strikeouts she threw today.  

Upstate kicked off game two with an early lead. The Spartans posted one run in the bottom of the first courtesy of Sarah Price as Bella Bertot and Denver Lauer added to the total in the bottom of the second. Lauer put the nail in the coffin with one final run in the bottom of the fourth. Alyssa Kelly achieved her 11th win, surrendering no runs for the fourth time this season.

How It Happened               

  • B1: Peyton Darnell fouled out a ball down the left field line giving Sarah Price enough time to make it home and put Upstate on the board.  
  • B2: Bella Bertot sent a ball flying to left field, earning herself a double and sending Denver Lauer running home.  
  • B2: Bertot came home shortly after as Sarah Price single to left field. 
  • B4: Alexa Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield as Denver Lauer scored her second run of the day.  

  
Notable               

  • Sarah Price recorded her 21st stolen base of the season in the second inning of game two; this was her 87th career stolen base.  
  • Denver Lauer had a career high for stolen bases (3) during game two.  
  • Hannah Houge recorded her fifth double-digit strikeout of the season.  
  • Her grand slam in game one was Celeste Delorenzo's third home run of the year and her second in three games.  
  • Delorenzo's grand slam in game two is the third Spartan grand slam of the year.
