CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Making it five times through six weeks a Spartan has received a Big South Conference weekly award, USC Upstate baseball's Austin Morgan earned Starting Pitcher of the Week honors, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Â
A native of Easley, S.C., Morgan earned his third victory of the season after turning in a career-long outing on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings in a game two start against Radford. He scattered four hits while allowing just seven baserunners and one run in earning the Spartans a doubleheader split in a 9-1 victory. He held Radford to a .174 team batting average last Friday, allowing more than one baserunner on one occasion while posting two three up, three down innings.
Â
Finishing one strikeout shy of his career-high, Morgan fanned eight Highlander batters while allowing just one walk. His eight strikeouts follow his career-best nine against Presbyterian during the opening week of conference play as his 17 punchouts in league play lead the Big South.
Â
The honor marks the second conference weekly award for Morgan, joining his Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week win from March 8, 2021. He joins teammates Devin Buckner (Player), Al Holguin (Freshman), Noah Rabon (Player), and Noah Sullivan (Freshman) as recipients of a conference weekly honor this season.
