CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After its first three-game series sweep of the season, USC Upstate softball stacks weekly honors from the Big South Conference as the league announced its weekly award winners Monday afternoon with Peyton Darnell earning the Player of the Week while Alanna Deal shares Freshman of the Week honors.
Peyton Darnell earns Big South Player of the Week honors for the second time this season following her stellar performance against Furman earlier last week and against Radford this past weekend. Darnell achieved a .750 slugging percentage and finished the week recording her 11th home run of the season with a grand slam against Radford. She made her mark for the week with two impressive games to wrap the Radford series, going 3-for-4 with a double in game two before going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and double in game three. She also added a multi-RBI game in game one of the series, knocking in two.
Alanna Deal earned her first Big South honors this week as she shares Freshman of the Week honors with Jaden Pone (LWU). Deal became a regular in the Spartans lineup during the Stetson Invitational (Mar. 4) and has started every game since in either left or center field. Last week Deal started all five games, occupying the seventh/eighth batter slot. Deal recorded six putouts while earning one run in each game of the Radford series. She finished the weekend with a .467 on-base percentage, reaching base seven times and a .333 batting average, going 4-for-12 at the plate. She also finished with a stolen base in game one against Radford.
Upstate now turns its attention to a mid-week doubleheader against East Tennessee State scheduled for Wednesday at Cyrill Softball Stadium.
