SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate Softball recorded its fourth straight shutout win as the Spartans closed out a double-header against Winthrop to go 2-0 before concluding the three-game series Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans began game one with four scoreless innings as Hannah Houge struck out six batters swinging and three looking to keep Winthrop off the board through the top of the fifth inning. Upstate scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning, as an Eagle error left room for two Spartan runs. This momentum helped stack one more run in the fifth and a final run in the bottom of the sixth as Denver Lauer was walked with the bases load. Houge recorded her 19th win of the season as well as her 16th complete game of the season with the 12 strikeouts she had today.
Game two started scoreless for the first two complete innings before Delorenzo would get things started for Upstate with a single to left center to bring Sarah Price home in the bottom of the third. Delorenzo went on to get a run of her own while Tiffany Domingue put one on the board as well to give Upstate the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Marisa Soterakis scored in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead for the Spartans. Peyton Darnell put the game out of reach for the Eagles with a home run over the wall in left center. Alyssa Kelly completed her eleventh complete game, achieving her 12th win while she had seven strikeouts.
