Noah Rabon Drives Home Three to Lead Baseball In a Late-Inning Setback Against Xavier Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Looking to take the series with Xavier Saturday afternoon, USC Upstate baseball fought back multiple times through the game, including in the late innings, before the Musketeers pushed across three runs in the final two frames to even the series at Cleveland S. Harley Park.
 
After falling behind after an early homer from Xavier, the Spartans fought back with runs in the first, third, and two in the fourth to tie the game heading into the middle innings. Answering a two-run inning from the Musketeers in the seventh, Upstate countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for the first time. Xavier, however, scored three unanswered runs to take a 9-7 victory.
 
Going 1-for-2 at the plate, tallying a pair of sacrifice flies, redshirt sophomore leftfielder Noah Rabon drove in three runs to tally his fifth multi-RBI game of the season. Tacking on an additional two RBI, senior first baseman Devin Buckner finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Opening the scoring with his third longball of the weekend, Xavier's Luke Franzoni clubbed a three-run homer to left to give the Musketeers an early lead.
  • B1: Getting a run back in the bottom half of the inning, Noah Rabon pulled a single into left to plate Devin Buckner for Rabon's first RBI of the game.
  • T3: Xavier plated a fourth run off an Andrew Walker sac fly in the third, pushing its lead back to three.
  • B3: Answering the Musketeers' run, Rabon drove home Buckner once again, this time with a sac fly to left.
  • B4: Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, Noah Sullivan brought home a run as he was hit by a pitch to kickstart a two-run frame. Rabon tallied his third RBI of the game with another sac fly, this time to right.
  • T7: Busting up the 4-4 tie, Jack Housinger put Xavier back on top with a two-run double down the rightfield line.
  • B7: Taking the lead for the first time in the game, Upstate answered Xavier's two runs with three of their own. Stepping to the plate as a pinch hitter, Easton Cullison drew a walk with the bases loaded before Buckner laced a single into center to plate two more.
  • T8: Reclaiming the lead, pinch hitter Grant Stephenson shot a ball back up the middle to plate two Musketeer runners and put Xavier on top 8-7.
  • T9: Adding an insurance run in the ninth, Alex Helmin singled through the left side to bring in the game's final run.
 
Notable
  • Driving home three runs and two runs, respectively, Noah Rabon and Devin Buckner tallied their fifth and sixth multi-RBI games of the year. For Buckner, Saturday's game also marked his sixth multi-run game with the game marking the fourth time he's collected a multi-RBI and multi-run game in the same game.
  • Racking up seven punchouts over 5.0 innings of work against Xavier, Austin Morgan picked up his career-high strikeout total in his third start of the year. He punched out at least one hitter per inning while striking out two in two separate frames.
