SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Facing an opportunity to win a series Sunday afternoon against Xavier, USC Upstate baseball was locked in another tight game with the visiting Musketeers, seeing the game tied into the late innings before succumbing late for the second straight game.
Jumping out early, the Spartans plated two runs in the first, including the game's first run on an inside-the-park homer from senior rightfielder
Noah Myers before Xavier battled back to regain the lead with three runs in the third and one in the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage.
Upstate answered in the seventh as redshirt junior centerfielder
Jack Hennessy plated two with a single through the middle to tie the game. The Musketeers responded with a run in the eighth before adding a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.

- B1: Lifting a ball in the air to left that travelled all the way to the wall, Noah Myers raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run as the ball caromed away from the leftfielder. With two men on later in the frame, Noah Rabon singled on the right side before a throwing error advanced all runners as Devin Buckner came into score.
- T3: Getting a run back in the game, Xavier's Jerry Huntzinger plated the first run of the inning with a sac fly to center. Two runs later came in as Andrew Walker slapped a pitch into the left-center gap for a two-run single.
- T5: The Musketeers extended their lead with a solo homer off the bat of Matthew DePrey to straight-away centerfield in the fifth.
- B7: At the plate with two men in scoring position, Jack Hennessy singled back through the middle scoring Easton Cullison and Kyle Lehmann to tie the game at 4.
- T8: Hitting into a double play with runners on the corners, Luke Franzoni brought home the go-ahead run for Xavier.
- T9: Tallying a pair of insurance runs, the Musketeers' DePrey drew a walk with the bases loaded before Huntzinger delivered a sac fly to center to plate two runs in the frame.
Notable
- Going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, Devin Buckner and Easton Cullison recorded their sixth and first multi-hit games of the season. With his two-RBI single in the seventh, Jack Hennessy tallied his first multi-RBI effort of the year.
- Reaching with a single in the first inning, Noah Rabon improved his hitting streak to 11 games to open the 2022 campaign. Adding to his streak from last season, he's reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.
- Coming on in relief in the ninth inning, Julian Parson made his USC Upstate debut. He allowed just a walk in 0.2 innings of work.
