SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following the double-header sweep on Friday afternoon, Upstate dominated Winthrop in a 9-0, six-inning game to achieve its fifth straight shutout. The last time Upstate achieved such a feat was in February of 2014 when Anna Miller Nickel was on the mound for the Spartans.
Upstate wasted little time to get ahead of the Eagles in game three. Tiffany Domingue hit a double, helping Madison Lanoux earn the first run of the game and went on to earn her own run off Peyton Darnell's single, both in the first inning. The Spartans hit their stride in the bottom of the second inning as Marisa Soterakis, Sarah Price, and Celeste Delorenzo all posted runs, giving Upstate the 5-0 lead. Casey Goguts extended the lead for the Spartans with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, while Domingue secured the win with a home run over center field, bringing Delorenzo home for her second run of the game. Hannah Houge achieved her 20th win of the season with the seven strikeouts she had today. She finished the series with Winthrop having pitched 13.0 innings and had 19 strikeouts. Houge has won the last five straight games she has played in.
Prior to the game, Upstate Softball took a moment to honor the Upstate alumni who were recognized this morning including one of Upstate Softball's own, Anna Miller Nickel (2014). Miller Nickle was joined by Brittany Starling after they were both inducted into the Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame this morning. Cyndi Waters joined the Hall of Fame winners to help throw the first pitches of the game; Waters was also recognized this weekend as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.
