Softball Runs Winning Streak to a Season-Best 12 Following a Doubleheader Sweep of Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Spartans stride on as they set a new season high earning their 12th straight win in a row, surpassing their previous 11-game win streak from the beginning of the season with a double-header sweep of WCU on Wednesday afternoon.

Game one took a slow start, as all zeros occupied the board for the first two complete innings. Tiffany Domingue broke the drought for Upstate with a three RBI double to right center. Hannah Houge and the Spartan defense held the Catamounts scoreless until they hit a one-run double to get on the board. Houge closed out the game with her seventh strikeout of the game earning her 21st win of the season.

Upstate changed the pace for game two, posting three runs in the first three innings. Summer Johnson and Celeste Delorenzo posted their first runs of the day while Marisa Soterakis posted her second on the day. The Spartans continued their scoring run with Denver Lauer scoring one in the top of the fourth and Domingue and Jacquay scored one each in the top of the fifth. Sarah Price scored her second run of the day to start the top of the sixth while Domingue and Delorenzo helped to put the game out of reach with two more in the top of the sixth. WCU was able to get one on the board late again with one run in the bottom of the sixth. Alyssa Kelly earned her 13th win of the season with the four strikeouts she had in game two.

How It Happened 
  • T2: Mady Lanoux landed on first base with a single while Summer Johnson stepped on third and advanced home off a WCU error by the centerfielder.
  • T3: Celeste Delorenzo hit a double to right center to bring Marisa Soterakis home, extending Upstate's lead to two runs.
  • T3:Delorenzo reached home off a Peyton Darnell single. Casey Goguts attempted to score as she passed third, but was called out at the plate.
  • T4: Denver Lauer kept the Spartan scoring trend going as she came home while Sarah Price reached first with a hit through the right side.
  • T5: Darnell hit a single to the short stop to bring Tiffany Domingue home from third base, while pinch runner Caroline Jacquay advanced to third.
  • T5: Jacquay scored shortly after as Madison Lanoux hit a single to center field and made it to second off the WCU throw.
  • T6: A single to center field from Celeste Delorenzo gave Sarah Price enough time to earn her first run of the game.
  • T6: Delorenzo recorded her second run of the game as Casey Goguts reached on a fielder's choice.
  • T6: Domingue posted her second run of the game as well as, as she reached home off a WCU error.
  • B6: WCU posted one run as Natalie Henry scored as Bailey Huneycutt grounded out to Tiffany Domingue.
 
  
Notable               
  • Upstate is 6-0 when facing off against SoCon opponents.
  • Sarah Price's two steals in game two give her 27 on the year, tying her career high set in 2019. Price has stolen two bases in three of the last four games. She has a 12-game reached base streak which is the longest streak Upstate currently has.
  • Denver Lauer's two steals on the day put her at 16 for the year. Lauer has stolen a base in each of the last three games and is tied for the longest streak of her career.
  • Marisa Soterakis' two hits in game one gives her, her first multi-hit game of the year.
  • Peyton Darnell's two RBI in game two gives her, her team leading 12th multi-RBI game of the year.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will remain on the road to resume Big South competition, taking on North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. in a double-header on Saturday and one game on Sunday.
