A Career-Best Game From Noah Sullivan Powers Baseball to a D1 Era Record Six Home Runs in a 12-5 Non-Conference Victory at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Coming off an extra-inning setback Tuesday night in its first of two midweek contests, USC Upstate baseball wasted no time building a lead Wednesday night, slugging their way to a 12-5 victory at Gardner-Webb in a non-conference meeting with its Big South rival.

Taking little time to erase the feeling of last night's defeat, senior catcher Devin Buckner jumped on a 3-2 pitch and clubbed a leadoff homer to kickstart a 12-run and 11-hit evening. Following Buckner's lead, freshman designated hitter Noah Sullivan (twice), redshirt sophomore leftfielder Noah Rabon, redshirt sophomore shortstop Troy Hamilton, and sophomore third baseman Easton Cullison each took a home run trot, giving the Spartans a Division I era (2007-pres.) record six home runs.

Making his first start since March 13, redshirt sophomore left-hander Sawyer Worrell picked up his second victory of the season after he tossed 2.0 innings, scattering two hits and an earned run while striking out three against zero walks. Working 4.0 innings in relief, freshman right-hander Julian Parson worked a career-long outing, surrendering just one hit and two walks as he struck out two.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Jumping on the scoreboard first, Upstate's Devin Buckner ensured a Spartan lead following the first batter of the game, homering to left. Following a hit-by-pitch to Noah Myers, Noah Sullivan hit a two-run shot to left-center.
  • B1: Getting back one of the three runs surrendered in the top half of the inning, Alec Burns homered to center.
  • T2: Answering the team's three-spot in the first, the Spartans did one better in the second by adding four more runs. Buckner got the scoring started again in the inning with a single to left before Sullivan slugged his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to left-center.
  • T3: Making it three-for-three in homers per inning, Noah Rabon hammered a solo shot to left-center to lead off the inning and build an 8-1 Upstate lead.
  • B4: Putting forth its highest-scoring inning of the game, Gardner-Webb pushed across three in the home half of the fourth. Bo Rusher began the scoring with an RBI single to right with Trevor Mattson following up with a two-run homer.
  • T5: Getting back a pair of runs, the Spartans pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning. Troy Hamilton put the first on the board with the team's fifth home run of the game while Myers tacked on another tally with a sac fly to left.
  • T7: Collecting his career-best sixth RBI of the night, Sullivan drove home Buckner with a single to rightfield, building an 11-4 Upstate advantage.
  • T8: Hitting the sixth homer of the night for Upstate, Easton Cullison sent an 0-1 pitch over the rightfield wall to cap the Spartan scoring.
  • B9: Pushing across the final run of the game, the Runnin' Bulldogs' Luke Osteen came into score on the throw following a Carson Yates single.

Notable
  • With six long balls Wednesday night, Upstate set a Division I era (2007-pres.) record for homers in a game. The Spartans' total shattered the previous record of three, most recently accomplished on May 20, 2017, against NJIT.
  • With two homers, three hits, and a career-best six RBI, Noah Sullivan increased his team-leading reached base streak to 22 games while collecting his team-best 19th multi-hit game and his seventh multi-RBI game.
  • Sullivan's six RBI Wednesday are the second-most in a game by a Spartan this season, just behind Cameron MacIntosh's eight-RBI as part of Upstate's other individual two-homer game of the season against Northern Kentucky on March 11.
  • Making his first start and second pitching appearance since March 13, Sawyer Worrell collected his second victory of the year. Working in relief, Julian Parson tossed a career-long outing with 4.0 scoreless innings.
