Upstate Falls Short in Athens After Two Home Run, Eight Inning Battle With #13 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – USC Upstate fell 5-3 in extra innings after going toe-to-toe with #13 Georgia on Wednesday night in Athens. Upstate was deadlocked with Georgia after the fifth inning with the game tied twice and the lead exchanged four times.   
  
The game went scoreless for the first two complete innings until Summer Johnson hit a single in the top of the third, bringing home Sarah Price. UGA responded to the run with a two RBI double to take the lead. Peyton Darnell tied the game in the top of the fourth with a home run over left field while Tiffany Domingue reclaimed the lead for Upstate with a home run, once again over left field. The Bulldogs had the game tied once again in the bottom of the fifth, sending the game into extra innings. Despite the heart and hard work, Upstate fell in the bottom of the eighth when UGA hit a two run home run. Hannah Houge pitched 7.2 innings with six strikeouts against the nationally ranked team.

How It Happened  

  • T3: Summer Johnson hit a single to left center, allowing Sarah Price to make a break for home plate from her stolen second base position.  

  • B3: Sara Mosley got UGA on the board with a home run over left field as Kuma came home with her.  

  • T4: Peyton Darnell responded to UGA's home run with one of her own to left field to tie the game at 2-2.  

  • T5: Tiffany Domingue gave Upstate the lead with a home run to left field.  

  • B5: Sara Mosley hit a single up the middle to send Mackenzie Puckett to tie the game once again (3-3).  

  • B8: Lyndi Rae Davis hit a home run to center field to bring home Jaiden Fields and end the game.  
      

Notable                

  • Upstate joins Texas A&M and Minnesota in being one of three teams to force the Bulldogs to compete in extra innings.  

  • This game was the first time in the series history that the two teams have had to go to extra innings.  

  • Peyton Darnell hit her 13th home run of the season in the fourth inning. 

  • Tiffany Domingue hit her eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning. 

  • Sarah Price achieved her 31st stolen base of the season.
