Spartans Fall in Opener to Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Despite a four-run push in the top of the fourth, the Spartans fell 12-4 in game one on the road against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs.  
   
Upstate tried to contain Gardner-Webb as the Bulldogs got an early jump, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Hannah Houge started on the mound for the Spartans and had three strikeouts in 1.1 innings until she was relieved by Adison Yoder in the bottom of the second. Yoder pitched 2.2 innings and had one strikeout to try to cap off the Bulldogs scoring. Upstate responded to the Bulldogs' runs with a scoring run of its own in the top of the fourth inning off a GWU passed ball and a three-RBI home run from Peyton Darnell.

  • B1: Pesqueira hit a double to left-center to send Goodrum and Mitchell home. 

  • B1: Short hit a single to second base, advancing Pesqueira home.  

  • B2: Nicholson hit a single through the left side, advancing Mitchell home.  

  • B2: With the bases loaded, Key walked, advancing Lyon home.  

  • B2: Nicholson reached home off an error from the Upstate third baseman. 

  • B2: Lawrence hit a single to left field, advancing Key home.  

  • B2: Montgomery reached home off an error from the Upstate third baseman.  

  • B2: Goodrum hit a single to right field, advancing Short home and making the game 10-0.  

  • B3: Short hit a single up the middle, advancing Nicholson and Montgomery home. 

  • T4: Sarah Price reached home plate off a GWU passed ball.  

  • T4: Peyton Darnell hit a home run over left field to bring home Tiffany Domingue and Summer Johnson.  
       

Notable                 

  • Peyton Darnell hit her 14th home run of the season in the fourth inning.  

  • With her three-RBI, Darnell achieved her 14th multi-RBI game of the season. 

  • It is the first time Upstate has had back-to-back losses this season.  

  • This is the first game Upstate has lost to Gardner-Webb in the 28-game series.
