Baseball Unable to Match One of the Nation's Top-Scoring Offenses in Setback Against (RV) Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – Back in the state of Georgia in the midweek for the third time in the last four weeks, USC Upstate baseball struck early but was unable to overcome one of the top-scoring offenses in the country Tuesday night in a 27-4 setback at (RV) Georgia Tech.

For the sixth time in seven games, the Spartans turned a free base and a steal from senior rightfielder Noah Myers into a run as freshman catcher Jace Rinehart drove home the opening run of the game. The Yellow Jackets answered with an eight-spot in the bottom of the first to set the table for scoring in six of eight innings.

Leading the offense, Rinehart, freshman designated hitter Noah Sullivan, and redshirt sophomore shortstop Troy Hamilton each tallied multi-hit efforts. For Rinehart, the multi-hit game was his third in as many games while Sullivan's marked his team-leading 15th such game and Hamilton's his sixth multi-hit game of the season.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Earning a leadoff walk and stealing his way into scoring position, Noah Myers came into score on a single into right-center off the bat of Jace Rinehart, securing Upstate a run in the first inning for the sixth time in seven games.
  • B1: Sending 13 men to the plate in the inning, Georgia Tech answered the Spartans' run in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight runs in the frame. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of four free bases in the inning while pounding out three extra-base hits.
  • B2: Adding to Georgia Tech's lead, Tim Borden II homered to left to extend his team's lead.
  • T3: Beating out an infield single and swiping his second bag of the game to work himself into scoring position, Myers crossed the plate for the second time as Noah Sullivan hit a single back through the box to plate the run.
  • B3: Getting back their run in the bottom half of the inning, the Yellow Jackets pushed across a run on an Andrew Jenkins sac fly.
  • B4: Georgia Tech tacked on three additional runs in the fourth behind a two-run homer from Drew Compton and an RBI single from Chandler Simpson.
  • T6: Earning a two-out walk and stealing himself into scoring position, Easton Cullison came into score as Troy Hamilton singled back up the middle.
  • B6: Answering the Spartans' run in the top of the inning, Georgia Tech's Jake DeLeo added two runs with a homer to left.
  • T7: Again taking advantage of a two-out walk, Cameron MacIntosh tripled to center as Sullivan raced home to score Upstate's final run.
  • B8: Capping the game's scoring, the Yellow Jackets tallied 12 runs on 10 hits, three errors, three free bases, and a wild pitch.

Notable
  • Swiping bags in the first and third, Noah Myers increased his season stolen base total to 15. The total marks the most by a player in a single season under head coach Mike McGuire as a Division I head coach while marking the second-most steals by a Spartan in a single season in the program's D1 era (2007-pres.).
  • Plating a run in the top of the first, Upstate has scored in the first inning in six of the last seven games.
  • Entering the game as the reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, Jace Rinehart continued his hot streak at the plate, posting his third consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI Tuesday night.
  • Adding multi-hit efforts against Georgia Tech, Noah Sullivan and Troy Hamilton recorded their 15th and sixth multi-hit games, respectively, this season.
