Baseball Drops Series Opener in First-Place Battle at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Opening a series featuring two former Atlantic Sun foes fighting for the top spot in the Big South standings, USC Upstate baseball fell on the wrong end of the series-opener as Campbell took game one in the battle for first place 17-2 Friday night.

It was Campbell that struck first, plating four runs in the bottom of the second to build an early lead before the two programs traded runs for three consecutive half-innings. Leading to the victory, the Camels broke open a 5-2 game in the home half of the fifth, scoring 10 runs to put away the game, adding two more in the bottom of the sixth to cement the 17-2 final.

At the plate, senior first baseman Devin Buckner tallied the Spartans' lone multi-hit game, securing his 11th of the season. Credited with the lone RBI of the night for Upstate, freshman catcher Jace Rinehart extended his hitting streak to five games while he's picked up a hit in each of his seven starts this season.

Scoring Summary
  • B2: Opening the game's scoring with a squeeze play with runners on the corners, Campbell plated four runs in the second inning. Following the squeeze, a second run came home off a wild pitch that caromed off the umpire before the final runs of the frame came in on a Tyler Halstead home run.
  • T3: The Spartans got a run back in the third as Noah Myers reached on a fielder's choice that featured an errant throw from the Campbell shortstop that allowed Cole Caruso to race in from third.
  • B3: Answering Upstate's run from the top of the frame, Campbell put another run on the board with a Connor Denning sac fly to left.
  • T4: Continuing the trend of getting back a run, Jace Rinehart singled to left, bringing in Noah Sullivan who scored from second.
  • B5: Opening the inning with seven consecutive hits, the Camels tallied 10 runs on eight hits in the inning, including pushing a pair of runs across with additional squeeze plays with runs also coming in on a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.
  • B6: Capping the scoring, Ty Babin and Tyler Halstead each homered to right to tally the final two Camel runs of the evening.

Notable
  • Collecting a pair of hits Friday night, Devin Buckner collected his 11th multi-hit effort of the season. He enters Saturday's game as one of four Spartans with 10 or more multi-hit games this season.
