Baseball Opens Season's Final Series with Gritty Comeback Win over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kicking off a three-game non-conference series to wrap the 2022 regular season Thursday night, USC Upstate baseball showed its gritty nature in a come-from-behind Power-5 win, knocking off Ohio State 6-5 in the series opener Friday night.

It was the host Buckeyes who jumped out first using solo homers in the first and second to build an early lead, but the Spartans battled back with two runs in the third to tie the game. Another Ohio State solo shot reclaimed the lead for the hosts in the fifth before redshirt sophomore shortstop Troy Hamilton answered with a two-run homer off the top of the wall in left to give Upstate a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Spartans added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth while withstanding Buckeye comeback attempts with stellar defense from senior second baseman Cameron MacIntosh suffocating two rally attempts.

Hamilton's two-run homer delivered his third career multi-RBI game, tying a career-high with his pair of RBI while he was joined by senior rightfielder Noah Myers with a multi-RBI game as Myers also drove home two runs. Senior catcher Devin Buckner collected his 20th multi-hit game of the year behind a team-high three hits with sophomore third baseman Easton Cullison and senior centerfielder Jack Hennessy joining Hamilton with an extra-base hit as each recorded stand-up doubles.

The second, a 1-3 groundout with a spectacular effort by the pitcher to record an out, tied the game.
  • B5: For the third time in the game, Ohio State produced a run with a solo homer as Blayne Robinson homered to right to push the lead in the Buckeyes' favor.

  • T7: After back-to-back infield hits, a line drive from Noah Myers that got down in front of the Buckeyes' rightfielder led to a run as Hennessy scored from second.
  • B7: Getting back a run, Ohio State loaded the bases with three straight singles to open the inning. A sacrifice fly to center from Archer Brookman drove in the half inning's lone tally.
  • T8: Following a one-out double from Easton Cullison into the rightfield corner, the Spartans added an insurance run as Grant Sherrod nestled a ball in front of the rightfielder as Cullison scored from second to build back Upstate's two-run advantage.
