FARMVILLE, Va. – Continuing its defense of second place in the Big South Conference standings, USC Upstate baseball used a massive first inning, scoring nine runs and seeing each of the first 11 batters to the plate reach base to stake an early lead it would not relinquish in a 15-6 series-clinching victory Saturday afternoon against Longwood.
Posting the team's second-largest scoring of the season and 17
th five-plus run inning of the year, each of the first nine hitters to the plate scored for the Spartans in the first inning with 14 total hitters coming to the plate. Upstate added six more runs to their total with a run in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the ninth to secure the 15-6 win.
Six of the Spartans in the starting lineup collected a multi-hit game as four of those six players recorded a multi-RBI game. Senior rightfielder

Austin Morgan combined for a season-high 16 strikeouts, the most since punching out 17 against Toledo on Feb. 21, 2021. Earning the win, Payne collected a season-high four strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work while Morgan struck out six over 3.0 innings to earn his second save in just his second relief outing of 2022.

Scoring Summary
- T1: Following a string of three straight singles to open the game, Upstate began its nine-run inning as Noah Rabon dropped a double in front of the leftfielder to plate two. Another run came in as Troy Hamilton reached on an error as Longwood attempted to cut down Noah Sullivan at the plate. Cameron MacIntosh and Easton Cullison followed with back-to-back RBI singles before two free bases, an HBP to Grant Sherrod and a walk to Devin Buckner, with the bases loaded and an RBI single from Noah Myers pushed the inning's run total to eight before the first out was recorded. The final run came across as Rabon recorded his third RBI of the inning on a groundout to third.
- B2: Longwood picked up a pair of runs in the second after taking advantage of a throwing error as Upstate attempted to double-up a tagging runner on a flyout to right as the first run came in because of the error. With a runner at third, a groundout to the right side plated the second and trim the Upstate lead to 9-2.
- T5: Claiming the team-lead in homers with his seventh of the year and fourth over the past six games, Myers uncorked a 2-2 pitch over the scoreboard in rightfield to hang double-digit Spartan runs on the board for the first time in six games.
- B5: With the bases loaded, the Lancers got the run back from the top of the inning as Michael Dolberry singled through the right side.
- T6: The Spartans added three more runs in the sixth with MacIntosh driving in the first with a double over the head of the centerfielder as Hamilton came into score. Adding two more runs, Buckner upped his RBI total to three with a two-run single back through the middle.
- B6: Matching the Upstate run total for the second straight inning, Longwood picked up three runs thanks to a pair of home runs. Eliot Dix hit the first, a two-run shot to right before Hunter Gilliam followed suit with a solo shot to right.
- T9: Tacking on the final two runs to earn a seven-run victory, Upstate scored behind a solo homer from Buckner—tying the team-lead with his seventh of the year—over the wall in left before a sacrifice fly from MacIntosh drove in the final run of the afternoon.
Notable
- Getting homers from both Noah Myers and Devin Buckner Saturday, each player's team-leading seventh of the season, Upstate runs its streak of games with a homer to 10. During the 10-game stretch, the Spartans have hit 19 homers after hitting 14 over the season's first 37 games.
- During the team's nine-run first inning, each of the Spartan starters scored a run as 11 straight batters reached before the first out of the inning was recorded. On the day, each Spartan starter recorded at least one hit and one run scored with six recording a multi-hit game.
- Upstate's trio of pitchers, Sawyer Worrell, Nate Payne, and Austin Morgan, combined to strike out 16 Lancers Saturday afternoon with the total marking a season-high and the most since Feb. 21, 2021. Each pitcher also recorded half or more than half of their outs with a strikeout.
- Reaching with a single in the first inning, Noah Sullivan extended his team-leading reached base streak to 31 games. The streak stands as the second-longest active streak in the Big South.
