SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a season that saw the program claim the most conference victories in a season in the Division I era (2007-pres.) and earn the No. 5 seed at the Big South Conference Volleyball Championship, USC Upstate volleyball has finalized its 2022 slate.
Â
The 29-match schedule features nine home games and sees Upstate playing in three early-season tournaments, one of which features three additional games in Spartanburg as the Spartans compete at Wofford in early September.
Â
"I'm excited for the upcoming fall season and the direction the program is heading," said head coach Ronda Shirley. "I'm looking forward to the competition in the preseason tournaments and it will help prepare us to compete in a tough conference schedule."
Â
For the fifteenth straight season, the Spartans open on the road, heading to Statesboro, Ga. for the second consecutive season to compete at the Battle In The Boro. The two-day event (August 26-27) features host Georgia Southern, Alcorn State, and Stetson.
Â
The second weekend of the season (Sep. 2-3) features a home event of sorts for Upstate as the team competes at the two-day Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg. The tournament features the host Terriers along with Appalachian State and Eastern Kentucky.
Â
The Spartans' final early-season tournament sees the Spartans travel to East Tennessee State and Johnson City, Tenn. for the ETSU Invite on Sep. 9-10. The two-day event includes the host Buccaneers, Clemson, and Georgia State.
Â
The Spartans wrap up the final week of the traditional, non-conference portion of the season with a three-game week against Alabama A&M, Furman, and Marshall. Upstate hits the road for the early part of the week, facing the Bulldogs in Huntsville, Ala. on Sep. 13 before travelling back to face the Paladins on Sep. 15 in Greenville. The week wraps with the Spartans' home opener against the Thundering Herd on Sep. 17.
Â
Upstate's final non-conference date comes in early October as the Spartans step out of Big South play to travel to Orangeburg for a match at South Carolina State.
Â
Big South Conference play begins on Sep. 22 and features eight pairs of home-and-home matches in a 16-game conference slate. The Spartans begin league play on the road at Presbyterian on Sep. 22 before opening a three-game homestand against High Point (Sep. 24), Gardner-Webb (Sep. 29), and UNC Asheville (Sep. 30).
Â
Following its final non-conference game on Oct. 3, Upstate continues a three-game road swing with a pair of conference matches at Charleston Southern and Winthrop on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8, respectively. The Spartans then return home on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 against Campbell and Radford, respectively.
Â
Closing out the month of October, Upstate travel to High Point (Oct. 20), UNC Asheville (Oct. 28), and Gardner-Webb (Oct. 29) while breaking up the road swing with a match versus Presbyterian on Oct. 22 at the G.B. Hodge Center.
