JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – On the road for the first time this season, USC Upstate baseball continued its trend of outperforming its previous game's scoring total as the Spartans bats came alive Tuesday to the tune of 15 runs on 15 hits with seven extra-base hits, including three home runs in a 15-7 victory over North Florida.
Upstate wasted little time in battering the baseball as redshirt junior shortstop
Troy Hamilton began the game and his 4-for-6 day with a double off the top of the wall in left-center. Redshirt junior leftfielder
Daniel Gernon followed with an opposite-field home run and redshirt junior second baseman
Noah Rabon added a double to put a three-spot up in the first.
The game saw a pair of big innings for the Spartans, putting five runs on the board in the third and the eighth. In the third, Upstate batted around for the first time this season, sending 10 men to the plate while the eighth featured a pair of homers, a three-run blast off the bat of Hamilton, and a no-doubt solo shot from sophomore first baseman
Johnny Sweeney.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander
Al Holguin picked up the victory for the Spartans, tossing a career-high 5.0 innings in his first career start. He allowed just two runs in his outing, picking up three strikeouts.

Scoring Summary
- T1: After Troy Hamilton doubled off the top of the wall in left-center, Daniel Gernon took a pitch the other way and wrapped a two-run homer around the rightfield foul pole. Noah Rabon followed the homer with a double before scoring as an errant throw as Rabon advanced on a wild pitch escaped the Osprey third baseman.
- T3: Continuing to attack the baseball, three of the first four hitters in the third singled as the Spartans loaded the bases. Noah Sullivan singled back through the middle to drive home two before Cole Caruso ripped a double down the leftfield line to plate one more. The final two runs were scored as Grant Sherrod sent the ball the other way for a two-run double into the right-center gap.
- B5: With a man at first base, Jakob Runnels drove a line drive out of the park in leftfield as North Florida gets on the board for the first time.
- T7: With Johnny Sweeney standing at third following a triple off the wall in center, Sullivan hit a chopper that found its way through the drawn-in infield to plate the run.
- B7: Loading the bases, North Florida took advantage of two Spartan errors in the inning to score three runs and pull the game to 9-5. Of the three runs scored by the Ospreys, two scored directly off an error.
- T8: Opening the inning with a pair of HBP, the Spartans tallied the first run of the frame thanks to a throwing error on a sacrifice attempt from David Pereira. Upstate produced four more runs behind a pair of homers, a three-run blast from Hamilton, and a solo shot from Sweeney.
- B8: Picking up his third RBI of the game, Runnels used a single to left to drive home the run from second.
- T9: Getting back the run surrendered in the previous half inning, David Pereira hit a sinking ball into no man's land between the leftfielder, centerfielder, and shortstop in left-center. Making a nice play, the shortstop took away a hit, but Kyle Henington raced home to score for the sac fly.
- B9: Getting the final run of the game, Alex Lodise hit a solo shot to left-center.
Notable
- Going 4-for-6 with three RBI from the leadoff spot for the Spartans, Troy Hamilton tallied a career-high hit total and tied his career-best RBI total. Tuesday's game also secured his first multi-hit and multi-RBI efforts of the season.
- With a combined seven hits between the two, Hamilton and Johnny Sweeney each finished a hit shy of the cycle. Hamilton needed a triple and Sweeney a double to complete their cycles.
- Adding 15 runs to the team's 10 runs scored in the series finale versus Towson, Upstate has scored double-digit runs in consecutive games for the first time since May 7-8, 2022 when scoring 15 and 11 runs, respectively, in games two and three at Longwood.
- Earning the win in his first career start, Al Holguin becomes the third Spartan starting pitcher this season to win in his first start at Upstate. For comparison, in 2022, seven Spartan pitchers made their first start in an Upstate uniform with none earning a victory as the group earned six no-decisions and one loss.
- Adding to the list of Spartans to make their Upstate debuts this season, redshirt sophomore outfielder Ty Tilson and freshman right-hander David James joined the group Tuesday. Overall, 15 Spartans have made their Upstate debut this season.
