SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball earned its first mid-week win after the Spartans defeated the Royals of Queens University 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium. Alyssa Kelly was able to pick up her fourth win of the season while Tiffany Domingue and Sarah Price had a multi-run game.  

Upstate took a two-run lead in the first inning as Domingue scored first off a Peyton Darnell single. Price made it home shortly after as pinch runner Caroline Jacquay stole second. Denver Lauer pushed the Spartans' lead to three runs as she came home off a throwing error from the Royals' catcher. A sacrificed bunt in the top of the third got the Royals on the board for the first and only time in the game. The Spartans responded with runs from Price and Goguts in the bottom of the third. Pinch runner, Madi Lanoux scored in bottom of the fourth to make the game 6-1 in favor of the hosting Spartans. Price capped the game with a double in the bottom of the sixth to send Domingue and Celeste Delorenzo home and make it an 8-1 finish.  

Alyssa Kelly had her fourth start this season in the circle for Upstate. Kelly pitched 7.0 innings, had six strikeouts, and walked away with her fourth straight win this season. After today's game against the Royals, Kelly sits with a 0.82 ERA along with 24 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched.

How it Happened: 

B1: After a 0-2 count, Peyton Darnell hit a single to left center which provided Tiffany Domingue enough time to safely reach home. 

B1: Caroline Jacquay pinch ran for Darnell and immediately stole second base. Jacquay's steal gave enough time for Sarah Price to advance home on the throw intended to get Jacquay out.  

B2: Denver Lauer made the most of a throwing error by the Royals catcher and came home to make the game 3-0. 

T3: The Royals got on the board with a sacrificed bunt in the top of the third, that sent home pinch runner Patton.  

B3: Lauer came up big in the bottom of the third, hitting a double to right center to get Casey Goguts and Sarah Price back home and make the game 5-1. 

B4: A throwing error in response to a sacrificed bunt by the Royals pitcher not only helped Alanna Deal reach first but also helped pinch runner Madi Lanoux get home.  

B6: Price finished the Spartans scoring with a double to left field that tallied two final runs for Upstate via Domingue and Celeste Delorenzo.  

        
                
Notable                

• With the two runs they each scored today, Price sits with three multi-run games on the season while Domingue sits with five.  

• Alanna Deal is currently riding a six-game hitting streak while Peyton Darnell is riding a four-game hitting streak.  

• Deal and Casey Goguts are also currently on a six-game reached base streak.  

• This is the first game this season that Upstate did not score off a home run. The Spartans were riding a six-game home run streak which is the longest home run streak for the program since joining the Big South.  

• Upstate set a new season high for doubles in a single game (3).  

Up Next for the Spartans 

Upstate will return to Cyrill Stadium on Friday afternoon to host its third and final tournament of the season in the form of the Wings Etc. Classic. The tournament will feature Iona, Drexel, and Queens and will run Friday-Sunday.
