SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball started the Wings Etc. Classic with wins over Drexel (6-5) and Iona (10-0) on Friday at Cyrill Stadium. Upstate advances its record to 9-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Wings Etc. Classic.
The Spartans started the day battling the Dragons of Drexel University. Upstate took a two run lead in the first inning as Tiffany Domingue and Sarah Price came home off a Peyton Darnell single and an error by the Dragons. Denver Lauer extended the Spartans' lead to three runs in the bottom of the second off an error by the Drexel catcher. Drexel was able to get on the board in the top of the third but Upstate responded with a home run from Summer Johnson. The sixth inning brought one more run for each team with Upstates' run coming from Casey Goguts in the form of a home run over left field. Drexel hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh as well as a single to make the game 5-5. Alanna Deal secured the win for the Spartans with a double to left center that brought home Price and finished the game 6-5.
Game two looked a little different as the Spartans started the game with four runs in the first inning. Domingue started the scoring as she came home off an error by the Gaels' catcher and was followed by Price who scored off a wild pitch. Pinch runners Caroline Jacquay and Aime Johnson came home to close out the inning with a 4-0 lead for Upstate. The two teams went scoreless for the next two innings. n the bottom of the fourth, Price was able to get Upstate's offense going again with a single that brought home Alanna Deal. With Lanoux and Price on bases, Domingue sent a home run over left field to tally another three runs for Upstate and make the game 8-0. Summer Johnson and Peyton Darnell concluded Upstate's scoring in the bottom of the fourth to finish the game 10-0 in favor of the hosting Spartans.
Maddie Drerup started in the circle against Drexel and had three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Alyssa Kelly went in to relieve Drerup against Drexel and walked away with one strikeout and her fourth win of the season. Kelly started in the circle for the Spartans in game two against Iona, where she surrendered no runs and was relieved by Olivia Hall who pitched the remaining 1.0 innings and kept a clean sheet for an 11-0 Spartan win.
