Three Home Runs, Three Pitchers, Three Wins as Upstate Collects Two More Wins on Day Two of the Wings Etc. Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball finished day two of the Wings Etc. Classic with wins over Queens (3-1) and Drexel (2-0) on Saturday at Cyrill Stadium. Upstate advances its record to 11-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Wings Etc. Classic.  

In game one, the Royals of Queens University were able to score first with a single up the middle. Upstate tied the game in the bottom of the second as Casey Goguts came home off Alanna Deal's single up the middle. An error in the bottom of the fourth from the Queens third baseman provided time for Taliyah Thomas to come home and make the game 2-1. Goguts would finish the game with a home run over left field, giving Upstate the 3-1 win. Celeste Delorenzo hit one double while Denver Lauer and Thomas each had one stolen base.  

Game two against Drexel started out with two scoreless innings for both teams. Upstate struck first as Tiffany Domingue hit a home run over the left field wall to give Upstate a one run lead. Cassie Norris capped the Spartans' scoring against the Dragons with a home run over right field in the bottom of the fifth. Goguts had one double against Drexel while Caroline Jacquay had one stolen base.  

Kamila Vicente made her first career start in the circle as Upstate went against Queens. Vicente had two strikeouts in her 3.0 innings pitched and earned her first win of the season. Maddie Drerup came in to relieve Vicente against Queens and had seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. Alyssa Kelly had her seventh start of the season against Drexel. Kelly collected her seventh win of the season with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched, surrendering no runs and finishing with a 0.74 ERA so far this season.

  • Kamila Vicente recorded her first career start and first career win over Queens.

  • This was the fifth time Upstate has hit two home runs in a game this season.  

  • Peyton Darnell is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.   

  • Goguts is currently on a 10-game reached base streak.
