SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite dropping the final game 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, USC Upstate softball won its three-game series against Stetson this week two games to one. Upstate softball capped the day with a successful alumni reunion which included the addition of dedicating the softball field at Cyrill Stadium to head coach Chris Hawkins.
Similar to game two on Friday, both the Spartans and the Hatters were dead locked scoreless through five complete innings. Alyssa Kelly had her 12th start in the circle this season and threw her 10th complete game. It wasn't until the top of the sixth inning that the Hatters were able to get on the board and force the Spartans to trail with less than two innings remaining to play. Upstate played through the remaining 1.5 innings and collected its first home loss of the season with a 1-0 finish in favor of the visiting Hatters.
The game was followed by a presentation given by USC Upstate's fifth chancellor, Dr. Bennie Harris and USC Upstate's Director of Athletics and Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics, Daniel Feig. Dr. Bennie Harris and Daniel Feig took the time to recognize head coach Chris Hawkins' success at USC Upstate and dedicate the field at Cyrill Stadium in his name. Upstate softball will now play all home contests on Hawkins Field at Cyrill Stadium. As well as the field renaming, Upstate softball welcomed home all Upstate softball alumni in an alumni reunion event that included a walk through memory lane with memorabilia from all of Hawkins 29 years of coaching available, music, food, and an alumni game on Hawkins Field.
