SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The first games on the newly named Hawkins Field at Cyrill Stadium brought Upstate to 22 wins on the season after the Spartans downed the Bulldogs of S.C. State 8-0 in both games of the double-header. Alanna Deal had a stellar performance with a triple and a three-RBI homerun in game one and a grand slam in game two.
Upstate got an early start in game one with a run from Denver Lauer. The bottom of the second brought another two runs for Upstate with a triple from Deal that sent Summer Johnson home, followed by a run from Deal to make the game 3-0. Both teams went scoreless through the third and fourth innings. The Spartans came up big in the fifth inning to finish the game as a walk and a ground out tallied two more runs before Deal hit a home run over right center to finish the game 8-0. Maddie Drerup had her 11th start of the season and threw her fifth complete game with two strikeouts to earn her eighth win of the year.
Game two started a bit differently as both teams went scoreless through the first three complete innings. With no outs and the bases loaded, Deal stepped up and hit a grand slam over left field to give Upstate a four-run lead. Pinch hitter, Liza Simmerson kept the Spartans runs going in the bottom of the fifth as she hit a sacrificed fly to send Casey Goguts home. The Spartans capped the game in the bottom of the sixth starting with pinch runner Katie Henri tallying her first career run as Tiffany Domingue was walked to first with the bases loaded. With the bases still loaded, Goguts hit a sacrificed fly down to right field which sent Sarah Price running. Peyton Darnell brought the game to an end as her single to right field brought Denver Lauer home for the 8-0 finish. Alyssa Kelly made her 13th start of the season in the circle where she threw eight strikeouts to secure her 13th win and 11th complete game.

How it Happened:
B1: With a 2-1 count, Casey Goguts grounded out to the Bulldogs short stop for Denver Lauer to score the first run of the day.
B2: Ahead in the count 2-1, Alanna Deal hit triple to left center which gave Summer Johnson time to get home.
B2: Deal came home shortly after as Lauer grounded out to S.C. State's shortstop.
B5: Celeste Delorenzo was walked and advanced to second as the Bulldogs tried to get Tiffany Domingue out at home but were unsuccessful.
B5: Pinch runner Aime Johnson came home as Casey Norris grounded out to the Bulldogs' second baseman.
B5: Deal finished the game with a homerun over right center, bringing Summer Johnson and Delorenzo home with her.
Game Two
Score: USC Upstate 8; S.C. State 0
Records: USC Upstate (22-3, 0-0 Big South); S.C. State (1-14, 0-0 MEAC)

How it Happened:
B4: Deal broke a three-inning run drought with a grand slam over left field with Delorenzo, A. Johnson, and Goguts coming in for runs as well.
B5: Pinch hitter Liza Simmerson kept Upstate's runs going with a sacrificed fly out to center field which send Goguts running home.
B6: With the bases loaded, Tiffany Domingue was walked which advanced Lauer and Price and brought Katie Henri home.
B6: Despite fouling out to right field, Goguts' sacrificed fly sent Price home to make the game 7-0.
B6: Darnell sent a single to right field which gave Lauer enough time to get home and finish the game.
