Upstate Achieves Two Wins Over Charleston Southern in Day One of the Series

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate softball started conference play with two wins over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon after a 3-2 win in game one and a 4-0 finish in game two.  

Game one began with a scoreless first inning and it was Upstate that got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Celeste Delorenzo hit a single to left center helped Cassie Norris advance to second base as well as send Alanna Deal home for her lone run of the day. The Bucs quickly responded with a run in the top of the third. After a scoreless fourth inning, Charleston Southern took the lead in the top of the fifth off a double to left center. In the bottom of the fifth, Casey Goguts tied the game with a homerun over left center which was followed by a homerun over left field from Peyton Darnell to win the game. Alyssa Kelly took the circle for her 14th start of the season and threw her 12th complete game. Kelly earned her 14th win of the season with eight strikeouts and 110 pitches.  

Game two against Charleston Southern began similar to game one, as both teams were scoreless through four complete innings. Maddie Drerup made her 12th start of the season in game two against the Bucs and had three strikeouts after 4.5 innings. Upstate was able to go on a scoring run in the bottom of the fifth that would prove to be the Spartans key to the second win of the day. Sarah Price got things started as she scored off a single up the middle from Tiffany Domingue. Peyton Darnell helped Upstate continue the run as her at bat not only resulted in her reaching first on a fielder's choice, but she reached second off an error on the Bucs. The error on the Bucs also provided Denver Lauer and Domingue the ability to get home as well as advance Goguts to third. Goguts came home shortly after as Cassie Norris hit a sacrificed fly to left field. Drerup walked away with her ninth win of the season as well as her sixth complete game and sixth game with no runs surrendered.  
 

Upstate looks to close out the series against Charleston Southern with game three tomorrow afternoon.  
 
Game One            
Score: USC Upstate 3; Charleston Southern 2 

Records: USC Upstate (23-3, 1-0 Big South); Charleston Southern (9-14, 0-1 Big south)  

Location: Cyrill Softball Stadium | Spartanburg, S.C. 

How it Happened: 

B2: Celeste Delorenzo hit a single to left center which advanced Cassie Norris to second while also bringing home Alanna Deal.  

T3: Cadence Walding scored on a wild pitch to give the Bucs their first run of the game.  

T5: Walding hit a doubled to left center that sent Lacy Johnson home and gave CSU the lead (2-1).  

B5: Casey Goguts tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth with a homerun over left field.  

B5: With a 2-2 count, Peyton Darnell secured the Spartans victory with a homerun over left center field. 

Game Two         
Score: USC Upstate 4; Charleston Southern 0 

Records: USC Upstate (24-3, 2-0 Big South); Charleston Southern (9-15, 0-2 Big south)  

Location: Cyrill Softball Stadium | Spartanburg, S.C. 

How it Happened: 

B5: Tiffany Domingue hit a single up the middle to advance Denver Lauer to second while Sarah Price made a break for home.  

B5: With the bases loaded, Peyton Darnell was able to reach first on a fielder's choice as the Bucs tried to get Denver Lauer out at home plate but were unsuccessful with an error. Domingue followed Lauer home off the error to put two runs on the board while Goguts made it to third and Darnell reached second.  

B5: Goguts came home shortly after off of a sacrificed fly to left field from Cassie Norris. 

                
Notable                

  • Casey Gogut's home run in game one was her fifth of the season. 

  • Peyton Darnell's home run in game one was her third of the season.  

  • Alyssa Kelly tied her season high of eight strikeouts for the fourth time this season.  

  • Goguts is currently riding a five-game hitting streak as well as a five-game reached base streak.  

  • There are seven Spartans who have double-digit RBI's this season; Domingue (20), Deal (18), Lauer (16), Darnell (15), Price (14), Goguts (12), Norris (12). 

Up Next for the Spartans 
 Next week, the Spartans will continue on with conference play and head to Buies Creek to take on Campbell Saturday and Sunday.
