Series History
Opening the 2023 Discount Tire College Basketball Invitational, USC Upstate and Indiana State are meeting for the first time in the Spartans' Division I era (2007-pres.). For head coach Dave Dickerson, his teams have twice faced Indiana State in his head coach career—both at Tulane—as he owns a 1-1 record against the Sycamores.

Players to Watch
Upstate: Averaging 16.5 points per game during the 2023 Hercules Tires Big South Men's Basketball Championship, sophomore guard Jordan Gainey marked Upstate's leading scorer during the event. He opened the tournament with a 25-point performance—his seventh 20-plus point game of the season—hitting the game-winner with a three with 0.1 seconds remaining to lead the Spartans to the semifinal round for the second straight season. He enters the national postseason as the Spartans' leading scorer at 15.1 points per game while also leading the Big South in total steals with 60.
 
Indiana State: Leading the Sycamores averaging 21.0 points per game, guard Cooper Neese was the leading scorer for Indiana State in the Missouri Valley Tournament. His best game of Arch Madness came against Belmont, scoring a season-high 33 points behind 12-of-16 shooting and 9-of-11 from three. He enters the Discount Tire CBI averaging 11.6 points per game while shooting 49.0 percent from the field.
