Overview: 

USC Upstate had some time to recoup after earning its first few conference wins against Charleston Southern last weekend. Of the four teams that started conference play last week, Upstate was the only team to go 3-0 in the series. The Spartans go into the three-game series this weekend on a five-game winning streak and the Fighting Camels come in after a 6-3 mid-week win over Queens. Despite Upstate leading the overall series 11-6 against Campbell, the most recent meeting between the two teams resulted in a 6-1 loss for the Spartans during the Big South Softball Tournament. In the 2022 season, Upstate won the regular season series 2-1 after a 10-1 win and a 4-2 win at Cyrill Stadium.  

Players to Watch:   

USC Upstate: The Spartans enter the series with a 25-3 record after earning their first series sweep over a Big South opponent. Alyssa Kelly finished the series against CSU with two wins while Maddie Drerup picked up one as well. Casey Goguts played well against the Bucs racking up three runs and four hits, as did Denver Lauer with three runs and three hits, and Tiffany Domingue and Alanna Deal who both had two runs and three hits.  

Upstate continues to lead in the Big South standings with a 25-3 overall record, as well a 3-0 conference record. The Spartans lead the conference in batting (.328 avg.), pitching (1.08 ERA), and fielding (.977%). Kelly leads the conference with a 0.65 ERA while Maddie Drerup sits just below her with a 1.49 ERA. Casey Goguts leads the conference in fielding with 118 putouts and a 1.000% percentage.  

Nationally, Upstate is ranked fourth for ERA (1.11), sixth for stolen bases per game (2.96), sixth for win/loss percentage (.893), 17th for batting average (.326), 27th for fielding percentage (.976), 28th for slugging percentage (.512), 41st for strikeout to walk ratio (2.98), 45th for homeruns per game (0.93), and 47th for scoring (5.61). 

Campbell: The Fighting Camels most recently downed the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte 6-3. Allyiah Swiney posted a third of Campbell's runs on Wednesday while Charlie Montgomery, Claudia Ware, Erin Rafferty, and Tyra Parker scored one each. Kayla Howald started in the circle for Campbell and pitched 2.2 innings before she was relieved by Isabella Smith. Smith pitched the remaining 4.1 innings and had eight strikeouts to earn her 13th win of the season. Makayla McClain helps lead the Fighting Camels' offense with 19 runs, 28 hits, five doubles, four triples, one homerun, 13 RBI, and 44 total bases as well as 15 stolen bases.

UP NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS  

The Spartans remain on the road next week starting with a double-header on Wednesday against Furman and will wrap up the week with a three-game series against Longwood in Farmville on Friday and Saturday.
