Grant Sherrod and Ty Tilson Collect Multi-RBI Games as Baseball's Late-Inning Comeback Falls Short Against UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Looking to capture the rubber match of its three-game series at UNC Asheville, USC Upstate baseball's late-inning comeback attempt fell short in a back-and-forth contest that saw each side match one another throughout the game as the Spartans fell 10-7 Sunday afternoon.

Upstate struck first on the day, scoring in the first before Asheville answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The Spartans retook the lead in the next half inning, staking a 3-2 lead, but the Bulldogs went ahead again with two more runs in the third. Fighting back to regain the advantage, Upstate scored twice in the fifth while Asheville scored six combined runs in the seventh and eighth to battle back to the lead and withstood two Spartan runs in the ninth for the victory.

Surpassing 40 runs batted in on the season, redshirt junior rightfielder Grant Sherrod collected his team-leading 11th multi-RBI game as he joined redshirt sophomore leftfielder Ty Tilson, who notched the Spartans' other multi-RBI effort, his fifth of the season and second of the weekend. Three Spartans, sophomore centerfielder Kyle Henington, sophomore third baseman Cole Caruso, and redshirt junior shortstop Troy Hamilton, recorded multi-hit days with Hamilton pacing Upstate with three hits while he and Caruso each tallied their team-high 13th multi-hit efforts of the year.

  • B1: Getting back its run and taking the lead, Asheville scored two errors in the first. The Bulldogs took advantage of a fielding error to tie the game with a sac fly leading to a 2-1 advantage after one complete inning.
  • T2: With each of the first two men in the inning reaching on a hit and a walk, Upstate used the same methods to score the first run of the second inning, using a sac bunt ahead of an RBI groundout by Henington to knot the game. Cole Caruso hit a single back through the middle to deliver the go-ahead run and a 3-2 Upstate lead.
  • B3: Continuing a trend of two-run innings and going back-and-forth with the lead, Asheville scored a pair of runs in the third to stake a 4-3 lead. The first scored on an RBI single before the Bulldogs benefit from a fielding error to plate the second run.
  • T5: In another two-run inning, Upstate regained the advantage on a two-run single to left-center from Ty Tilson as the Spartans' had loaded the bases preceding Tilson's at-bat.
  • B7: Retaking the lead, the Bulldogs took advantage of a fielding error and a wild pitch to plate two more runs in the seventh and take a 6-5 lead.
  • B8: Adding on to its leads, Asheville scored four runs in the eighth using a sacrifice fly, bases loaded hit by pitch, and a two-run single.
  • T9: Looking to erase a five-run deficit, the Spartans scored two runs in the ninth. Sherrod drove in the first run of the inning with a single down the leftfield line before Easton Cullison capped the game's scoring with a sac fly to center.
