Baseball Opens Homestand With 13-1 Setback in Rematch With Western Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coming off a four-game road stretch, USC Upstate baseball returned to Cleveland S. Harley Park Tuesday for a midweek rematch with Western Carolina, a rematch that saw the Catamounts come out on top in a 13-1 win.

Western Carolina jumped out early, hitting the first of three home runs on the day in the first before tacking on runs in the second and third innings. Over the next three frames, freshman right-hander David James came on for the Spartans and tossed a career-long 3.0 innings, retiring all nine hitters he faced in a hitless and scoreless outing while striking out two.

The Catamounts took advantage of free passes in the seventh to tack onto their lead, but Upstate found an answer with a run in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Jace Rinehart drove home the Spartans' lone run as he walked with the bases loaded.
