The Spartans Pack 17 Runs in Five Innings to Claim the Series Win Over the Highlanders of Radford

RADFORD, VA. - USC Upstate softball departed Virginia on Sunday with another series win under its belt after defeating the Radford Highlanders, 17-3 in five innings. Five Spartans had a multi-run day while four of those Spartans also had a multi-hit game. Casey Goguts (3) and Tiffany Domingue (2) showed consistency through the series and had multiple homeruns in the series. Maddie Drerup stepped up for the Spartans and was able to secure two wins in the series along with 11 strikeouts in 12.1 total innings pitched against the Highlanders

Upstate's offense showed its full potential in the final game of the series despite how the first inning may have tried to forecast a different result. The Spartans posted one run in the top of the first after Denver Lauer reached home off a Summer Johnson single. Radford responded with a two-RBI homerun over left field which caused Upstate to trail by one-run.  The second inning, the Spartans went on a six-run scoring spree with runs from Alanna Deal, Sarah Price, Denver Lauer Tiffany Domingue, Casey Goguts, and Caroline Jacquay reclaimed the lead for the Spartans. A double from the Highlanders brought in one-run in an attempt to chip away at the Spartans lead and make the game 7-3 after two complete innings. The second inning also saw Maddie Drerup enter the circle in relief of Alyssa Kelly, who made her 25th start of the season. Drerup entered the game in the second inning coming off a 3-2 win in extra innings on Saturday night where she had career-high nine strikeouts and 175 pitches in 9.0 innings. Domingue helped Upstate keep its momentum as she hit a two-RBI homerun over left field. Upstate's homerun was followed by a run scored by Goguts off a single from Deal.

The fourth inning saw yet another two-RBI homerun this time courtesy of Goguts who already had two homeruns in the series with Radford. Goguts' homerun came after Price tallied one run off a Denver Lauer double and Lauer came home off a Domingue single. With a comfortable 11-run lead (14-3) going into the fifth, Upstate solidified its win with three final runs. Drerup helped the Spartans' defense keep the Highlanders scoreless after the second inning to advance Upstate's record to 31-14 overall and 7-8 in the Big South. The freshman finished the day with two strikeouts and her 13th win of the season.
