Two Homers From Goguts and A Career-High Performance From Drerup Help Upstate Split Double-Header Against Radford

RADFORD, VA. - USC Upstate softball split the double-header against Radford on Saturday afternoon after a 6-5 loss caused by a seventh inning Highlander homerun and a 3-2 win in game two that took nine innings and an astounding 175 pitches from freshman, Maddie Drerup. The Spartans look to finish the series with a win Sunday afternoon in Radford, Va.

Game one started off with a bang as Casey Goguts got the Spartans on the board with her ninth homerun of the season in the top of the second inning. Pinch runner Taliyah Thomas added another run to the board of Alanna Deal's single just before Deal came home off a single from Mady Lanoux. Before the second inning was finished, Radford was able to score its first run of the day. The third inning brought one more run from Upstate yet again in the form of a Goguts' homer, as well as another run for the Highlanders. Continuing her precision with a bat, Goguts hit a sacrificed fly in the top of the fifth inning to score Sarah Price and give Upstate its final run of the game. The bottom of the hit saw three more runs for Radford off a double to center field and a two-RBI homerun which tied the game at five runs each. The Spartans came up just short, as the Highlanders took the win with a seventh inning homerun.

Similar to game one, Upstate started game two of the day with a homerun from Tiffany Domingue in the top of the third. A single up the middle provided Radford with its first run in game two during the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans continued to push for the win as they reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh with a single from Domingue that sent Deal home. Radford responded with a double to right center in the bottom of the inning that would force the game into extra innings. After eight complete innings, it was Summer Johnson that would come up big in the top of the ninth as the Highlanders tried to tag the right fielder out at home but she was too fast.

Alyssa Kelly made her 24th start of the season in game one against the Highlanders. Kelly had a season-high 125 pitches along with four strikeouts in the 6.1 innings she pitched. Maddie Drerup had a stellar performance in game two where she made her 19th start of the season. Drerup not only had a career-high nine strikeouts but also threw a career-high 175 pitches in her 9.0 innings pitched. The freshman came up big for the Spartans and improved her record to 12-5.
