Overview:
USC Upstate finished the regular season schedule strong with a series sweep against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. Alyssa Kelly had a stellar performance as she finished the weekend with two 8-0 shutout victories and threw her first career no-hitter in game three to earn Big South Pitcher honors. Denver Lauer earned her first career Big South weekly honors as she was named the Player of the Week after she went 7-7, scored four runs, had four RBI, seven stolen bases and had a homerun in both games two and three of the series for a 1.000 batting average accompanied by a 1.000 on base percentage and a 1.857 slugging percentage.
The Spartans fell to the Fighting Camels of Campbell University during the regular season series earlier this year. Lauer had a decent showing during the series with two runs, four hits, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Delorenzo also notched two runs and one hit against the Fighting Camels. Against Campbell, Kelly threw a combined 150 pitches across 10.0 innings and had two strikeouts. Maddie Drerup saw action against Campbell as well to record a combined 178 pitches across 7.3 innings and had five strikeouts.
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate: Alyssa Kelly's no-hitter and 10 strikeouts helped Upstate finish the regular season strong and finish third in the Big South. Kelly goes into the tournament riding a three-game winning streak while her counterpart Maddie Dreup is riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping Gardner-Webb two weeks ago and earning one win against the Blue Hose this past weekend. Lauer has continued to be a force to be reckoned with as she is riding a four-game hitting streak and has stolen at least one base in each of the last four games. Peyton Darnell is also on a six-game hitting streak as well as a 14-game reached base streak, which is the longest of the season.
Upstate leads the Big South in stats overall with a .305 batting average, 1.85 ERA, and a .972 fielding percentage. As far as hitting goes, Casey Goguts sits second in the conference (.381), while Denver Lauer is fifth (.361), Peyton Darnell is ninth (.336), Summer Johnson is 11th (.333), and Tiffany Domingue is 17th (.327). Kelly and Drerup lead the conference in pitching, with Kelly in first with a 1.68 ERA and Drerup second with a 1.85 ERA. Goguts leads the Big South for slugging percentage (.755) and on base + slugging percentage (1.162). Domingue (2nd), Lauer (3rd), and Goguts (5th) all occupy the top five for runs scored. Lauer leads the conference in stolen bases by 10 stolen bases (42).
Nationally, Upstate is ranked top 15 in two categories: fourth for stolen bases per game (2.69) and 12th for ERA (1.85). The Spartans are also ranked 31st for win/loss percentage (.712), 32nd for slugging percentage (.490), tied for 37th for triples per game (0.27), 38th for batting average (.305), tied for 41st for homeruns per game (0.98), 42nd for fielding percentage (0.972), and tied for 47th for scoring (5.27). Lauer is ranked fourth nationally for stolen bases (42) and seventh nationally for stolen bases per game (.81). Kelly is ranked eighth nationally for shutouts (8).
Campbell: The Fighting Camels most recently dropped their final series of the regular season to Longwood University. Campbell started strong in the series with a 4-3 victory but then fell 6-1 and 7-4 in games two and three to finish as Big South Regular Season Co-Champions and enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
