Baseball Earns Program-Best 18th Conference Victory, Opening the Charleston Southern Series with a 7-6 Win Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Looking to get back in the win column after seeing the team's season-long six-game winning streak snapped during the midweek, USC Upstate baseball took care of business and withstood a comeback attempt, clinching a program-record 18th Big South victory with a 7-6 win Friday evening over Charleston Southern.

Starting the scoring early, beginning a stretch that saw the team score in four of the first five innings, Upstate pushed across one in the first. Charleston Southern, however, scored two in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, but the Spartans responded in the second with a two-spot of their own to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Upstate tacked on three in the fourth and another in the fifth as an answer to a Buccaneer tally in the fourth as the Spartans saw Charleston Southern pull as close as one with a three-run eighth.

Recording his league-high ninth win of the season, redshirt junior right-hander Reese Dutton notched his eighth quality start of the year, allowing six hits and three runs over 6.0 innings of work. He handed the ball to redshirt senior righty Chase Matheny and redshirt sophomore righty Jake Cubbler who combined to throw the final 3.0 innings with Cubbler notching his sixth save, tying for the league lead.

Driving home what turned out as the winning run for the Spartans Friday, sophomore centerfielder Kyle Henington hit his first career home run, lifting of 2-2 pitch over the wall in right. Also a major contributor for Upstate, redshirt freshman third baseman Jake Armsey collected his first career multi-RBI game—the lone such effort for a Spartan Friday—while also notching his second-career multi-hit game. Redshirt junior first baseman Grant Sherrod and redshirt junior catcher David Pereira each recorded multi-hit games with sophomore designated hitter Jace Rinehart extending his team-long hitting streak to 14 games.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Seeing runners on the corners to open the game, the first run of the evening crossed as Cole Caruso scored as Charleston Southern turned a double play.
  • B1: Charleston Southern battled back to tie the game, working the bases loaded as Jared Payne singled to left to drive home the tying run. The Buccaneers went ahead in the next plate appearance as Bryce Brock lifted a sac fly to right.
  • T2: After Easton Cullison stole his 22nd base of the season to put himself in scoring position, David Pereira tied the game with a single back through the middle, knotting things at two. Pereira, who also stole himself into scoring position, scored as Jake Armsey singled down the rightfield line.
  • T4: Scoring thrice in the fourth to expand the lead, Armsey notched his second RBI of the night as he slashed a single through the left side. Grant Sherrod followed later in the inning with a run-producing single through the left side of the infield while a bases-loaded walk to Ty Tilson pushed across the final run in the frame.
  • B4: Cutting into Upstate's lead, Brock homered down the rightfield line, cutting the advantage to three runs.
  • T5: Providing an answer and getting the Spartans' run back, Kyle Henington launched a solo homer to right.
  • B8: Concluding the streak of innings with each of the runs scored via a home run, pinch hitter James Jett hit a three-run shot to right to pull Charleston Southern within one.

Notable
  • With its win Friday, Upstate improved to 18-4 in the Big South in 2023, establishing a Division I era (2007-pres.) record for conference victories in a single season—this does not include the 40-game conference season played by the Big South in 2021 in response to Covid-19 global pandemic. The 18 wins in 2023 break a tie with the 17-win seasons by the program in 2008 (ASUN; 17-16) and 2022 (Big South; 17-6-1).
  • Swiping second in the second inning, Easton Cullison set the program's D1 era record for single-season steals with his 22nd of the season, breaking a tie with former teammate Noah Myers who stole 21 bags in 2022. Cullison's 22 stolen bases tie for fifth-most in a single season in program history and sit six steals shy of Chris Leach's program-record 28 steals from the 1987 season.
  • With three stolen bases, Upstate improved its season total to 101, securing the first 100-steal season in program history.
  • Collecting his ninth win of the season, Reese Dutton claimed the league lead for pitching victories in 2023 with his total marking the second-most single-season win by a pitcher in program history. With four strikeouts against the Buccaneers, Dutton totals 87 punchouts on the year, a total that also ranks second in program history as both his win total and strikeouts rank behind Jordan Marks' 2021 season (10 wins; 101 strikeouts).
  • Notching three hits, Grant Sherrod exits Friday's game with 117 total bases this season, tying for the second-most in a single season in the program's D1 Era, tying the 117 total bases by Noah Myers in 2022. Andrew Runion holds the D1 era record with 122 total bases in 2008.
