CHARLESTON, S.C. – Entering the day off the team's 18
th Big South Conference win of the season and holding a chance to win its weekend series, USC Upstate baseball fell on the wrong side of the decision Saturday, falling 10-2 to Charleston Southern to set up a rubber match Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark.
The Buccaneers struck first, loading the bases against Upstate starter, junior left-hander
Henry Proger, scratching the first run on a bases-loaded walk. Proger, however, responded to the run by striking out the next three hitters he faced to limit the damage, allowing the Spartans to tie the game in the top of the second as sophomore designated hitter
Jace Rinehart extended his hitting streak with his sixth homer—third in his last four games—a solo shot to left-center.
Charleston Southern threatened again in the third, but Proger didn't flinch, punching out three more hitters with two runners aboard, giving him six strikeouts on the day. The Buccaneers busted up the tie game in the fourth with a two-run homer before seeing back-to-back homers in the seventh to extend the lead. A five-run eighth inning added insurance to the Buccaneers' advantage with Upstate putting one additional run on the board in the ninth behind a line drive, solo homer of the scoreboard in left from redshirt senior rightfielder
Adam Grob, his second of the season.

Notable
- With a single to left-center, Grant Sherrod collected his 118th total base of the season Saturday, giving him sole possession of second place on the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) single-season total bases leaderboard. Andrew Runion holds the D1 era single-season record with 122 total bases during the 2008 season—the program's first at the D1 level.
- Behind his solo homer in the second inning, Jace Rinehart extended his career and team-long hitting streak to 15 games as he's homered in three of the past four games. The hitting streak is the longest for a Spartan since Noah Rabon fashioned a 16-game hitting streak from April 20 to May 17, 2022—the second of his two 15-plus-game hitting streaks last season.
