CHARLESTON, S.C. – Looking to avenge its game two loss and get itself back into the win column with another Big South Conference series victory, USC Upstate baseball backed a career-best start with a strong day at the plate, taking a 10-2 win in Sunday's rubber match against Charleston Southern.
Tossing a career-long 7.0 innings and surrendering four baserunners—all hits—freshman right-hander
Mathieu Curtis earned his sixth victory behind his third career quality start, keeping Charleston Southern off-balance and allowing the Spartans' offense to go to work. Adding to his career-long outing, he struck out six batters, a career-high total.
As Curtis retired the Buccaneers in order in the first, Upstate did its damage in its second trip to the plate, scoring three runs in the second with the third run produced by a hit-and-run single from redshirt freshman
Jake Armsey proving the winning run. The Spartans tacked on one in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the seventh, and two in the eighth while surrendering just two runs in the third.
Backing Curtis and sophomore left-hander
Al Holguin who pitched the final two innings, surrendering one hit while striking out three, the Spartans collected a series-high 14 hits as four players recorded multi-hit games. Junior second baseman
Easton Cullison led the way with a career-high four hits, tying a career-high with two doubles. Three Spartans recorded multi-RBI games with sophomore designated hitter
Jace Rinehart collecting his two steaks with his seventh homer of the year, a two-run, 432-foot blast to center.

Scoring Summary
- T2: Following up a double and subsequent steal of third by Easton Cullison, Adam Grob roped a double of his own to left-center, leading to the first run of the game. A failed pickoff attempt with runners on the corners allowed Grob to score before a hit-and-run between Jake Armsey and David Pereira brought home Pereira from second, staking a three-run lead.
- B3: Getting back two of the team's surrendered runs, Charleston Southern's Tyrell Brewer hit a two-run homer to right-center, pulling the game within one.
- T4: After Armsey stole himself into scoring position, he'd come around to score as Cole Caruso doubled into leftfield, expanding Upstate's lead.
- T5: Shooting a ball the other way and splitting the right-center gap, Ty Tilson plated another Spartan run with an RBI triple before scoring via a sac fly off the bat of Adam Grob, making it 6-2 in favor of the visitors.
- T7: Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, Pereira drove home two runs as he dumped a single into centerfield, driving home Jace Rinehart and Cullison.
- T8: Pushing across the final two runs of the ballgame, Rinehart unloaded on the first pitch of his at-bat to center, hitting a 432-foot blast, capping the game's scoring at 10-2 in favor of Upstate.
Notable
- Hitting his second homer of the series and homering in back-to-back games for the second time this season, Jace Rinehart's seventh homer of the season gives him a long ball in four of his past five games. Homering in back-to-back games, Rinehart joins teammate Grant Sherrod (thrice) as the only Spartans to homer in consecutive games on multiple occasions this season.
- Extending his hitting streak with a homer for the second straight day, Rinehart's hitting streak stands at 16 games, the longest of the season for a Spartan and the longest of his career. The streak is also the longest for a Spartan since Noah Rabon's 16-game streak last season.
- Stealing third in the second inning, Easton Cullison swiped his team-leading 23rd stolen base of the season. He finishes the week setting the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) mark for single-season steals and sits five steals shy of the all-time program record (28 steals by Chris Leach in 1987).
