For the Spartans offense, Dara Russo came out strong in the first game of the season against College of Charleston, scoring the first goal of the season through the Big South Conference. Redshirt freshman Hailey Sapinoro stood out against the Cougars as she scored her first career goal late in the game to help the Spartans walk away with a tie. Cora Brendle remains the starting goalkeeper for USC Upstate after an exceptional 2022 season.

Hampton returns two of its top goal scorers, Maya Martir and Taryn Goodwin. Martir finished the 2022 season with three goals, two assists, eight points, 12 shots, and six shots on goal. Goodwin also finished with three goals resulting in six points as well as five shots taken. The Pirates also retained their primary goalkeeper, Alexis Deveaux. Deveaux appeared in 11 games for a total of 890 minutes played in the 2022 season and finished with 82 saves, a 2.83 goals against average, and a .745 save percentage.

Last Match

Upstate started the match against College of Charleston with an early goal in the 12th minute of play thanks to Russo and Nya Baccelli who was credited with the assist. Despite leading 1-0 through halftime, the Spartans conceded two goals in the second half. Sapinoro and the Spartan offense refused to start the season with a loss and were able to record a goal in the 88th minute of play to finish with a 2-2 tie.

Hampton was scheduled to kick off its 2023 season against UMBC but that game was unfortunately cancelled. Instead, the Pirates of Hampton University took on the Colonials of Robert Morris on Friday afternoon and fell 1-0 as the lone goal just before halftime gave Hampton its first result of the season.
