NORFOLK, VA. - USC Upstate women's soccer program collected its first win of the 2023 season after a 3-0 finish against Hampton University in Norfolk on Sunday afternoon. Captain Ashley Finn scored her first goal of the season while transfers Hannah Blodget and Paige Armstrong tallied their first goals as Spartans.
Upstate was dominant on offense from the beginning rattling off three shots in the first few minutes of the match. Despite the success moving up the field, the Spartans struggled to find the back of the net for the majority of the first half. The scoreless streak would be snapped in the 41st minute of play after Kennedy Jackson made a run up the left side of the field and found Hannah Blodget in the middle of the 18-yard box ready to sink one into the goal. Upstate went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead over Hampton.
The second half began in a similar fashion as the Spartans were eager to extend their lead beyond one goal. Ashley Finn did just that in the 58th minute of play as she made some space for herself and sent a shot to the back post to earn her first goal of the season. Refusing to let off the gas, the Spartans scored just minutes later thanks to Paige Armstrong who had been knocking on the door with three shots so far in the match. Upstate continued to press the Pirates while being diligent on defense. At the final whistle, Upstate was able to not only get its first win but did so in the form of a three-goal shutout.
Head coach Sharif Saber was happy with the team's performance saying, "I was very pleased with the performance today. Going on the road is never easy and to get the win while improving in the areas we focused on in training is a tremendous start to our season."
