Event Preview
USC Upstate cross country will travel to Boone, N.C. compete in its second race of the 2023 season in the form of the Covered Bridge Open, hosted by App State.
The Spartans started the season with the 38th Annual Eye Opener at Roger Milliken. Upstate's women finished 10th with Heaven Bennett leading the women with an 85th place finish. The men had an exceptional finish as well with a sixth place team finish. Nigel Dos Santos led the men with a 35th place finish and a new personal best time of 26:01.4. Carter Sexton (1:21), Jared Keklak (2:21), Sam Shimanskiy (1:04), Gabe Herron (1:10), and Derek Staton (2:00) all also improved their times from last year's Eye Opener.
Last year the Spartans were in Boone for the Firetower Project Open which is also held at Don Kennedy Trails. During the 2022 Firetower Project Open the men finished sixth of 10 teams with Nigel Dos Santos finishing 35th. Carter Sexton and Monroe Thompkins finished just behind Dos Santos. The women came in ninth overall with Heaven Bennett leading the pack. Bennett finished 21st with a time of 18:36.76.
Next UP
After spending some time in Boone, the Spartans will head to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Sept. 30th.
Josh Lee 5k
USC Upstate athletics, in partnership with Johnny and Laurie Lee of Spartanburg, S.C., is excited to host the 8th Annual Josh Lee Memorial 5K on Saturday, October 7, 2023 on the USC Upstate campus. Registration for the race is $25 and participants can sign up here.
