COLUMBIA, S.C. - A family feud was quickly turned into a silencing shutout as the USC Upstate Spartans went on the road to share a little brotherly love with fellow USC system school South Carolina in the form of a 4-0 shutout at the expense of the Gamecocks as the Spartans have now claimed two of the last three in the series.
The Spartans set the tone early as Jimmy James knocked in a perfectly placed Felipe Marty corner kick in just the 2nd minute of the match. The Gamecocks had to play a man down after the 9th minute but had an opportunity to even the score and swing momentum in their favor after being awarded a penalty kick. Cooper Jennings slammed the comeback door shut on the home team, denying his second penalty kick of the year.
In the 22nd minute, Jeremy Montero contributed to the pseudo-senior night as he earned his second goal of the season...but only his first of the night. The Spartans held a 2-0 lead going into the second half, but Montero launched a shot past the keeper in the 55th minute for his second goal of the night and his third of the season.
The third goal had effectively silenced both the crowd and the Gamecocks chance at a rally, but Dario Stadler sought to squash any chance, sniping a shot from outside the box, precisely placing the ball just outside the reach of the Gamecock goalie.
The Spartans would end the night with a 4-0 victory, having put in all the effort in what was the highest scoring match of the series.
