ROCK HILL, S.C. – Upstate Women's Soccer made the short trip to Winthrop this evening, facing the Eagles in a midweek matchup. As a team, the Spartans outshot the Eagles 20 to 2. Upstate earned nine corners, their second most in a game this season. Upstate finished the night with a 1-1 draw against the Eagles.
The match started in a defensive stalemate, with neither team firing off a shot until 16 minutes in.
Margret Edda Bjarnadottir claimed the first shot of the match, which was followed a minute later by a shot from
Savannah Noll. The next 12 minutes again showcased the backline for each team, with the third shot of the match occurring at the 29-minute mark, also by
Savannah Noll. The Spartans held the Eagles to zero shots in the first half.
Out of the halftime break, Winthrop found the back of the net first. In the 72nd minute of play, it was none other than
Dara Russo who found the equalizer. This was Russo's seventh goal of the season and 28
th career goal, which extends her Division 1 era leading mark in the record book for career goals. Additionally, her goal tonight makes her the highest-scoring player in the D1 era with 63 points. Russo finished the night with six shots, two being aimed on target.
Margret Edda Bjarnadottir added five shots of her own, followed by
Riley O'Bryan with four.
