Overview:
USC Upstate spent last weekend in Rock Hill, playing in the Winthrop Eagle Classic where the Spartans walked away with a 2-2 record after back-to-back wins on Sunday. Freshman Abby Polk had a strong performance as did Taliyah Thomas. Freshman Sierra Maness started two games in the circle for Upstate while sophomore Maddie Dreup and senior Alyssa Kelly saw action this weekend as well.
The Wofford Terriers most recently hosted their second tournament of the 2024 season where they finished with a 2-3 record after two wins against Northern Kentucky (14-8; 4-2) and losses to Saint Francis (5-1; 4-0) and Rhode Island (4-1).
Players to Watch:
USC Upstate: Polk led the Spartans through the weekend on offense with four runs, four hits, three RBI, four total bases, four stolen bases, and 10 putouts as well as a .500 batting average and a .500 slugging percentage. Thomas' bat remained hot after the Spartan Classic as she had one run, six hits, one double, two RBI, seven total bases, and four stolen bases alongside a .462 batting average and a .538 slugging percentage. The sophomore right fielder sits atop the Spartans stats with three runs, 11 hits, two doubles, one homerun, six RBI, 16 total bases, and five stolen bases as well as a .458 batting average and a .667 slugging percentage. Sierra Maness had made four starts in the circle so far this season and holds a 1.25 ERA with 34 strikeouts after 28.0 total innings pitched.
Wofford: Abbi Campbell leads the Terriers' stat lines so far this season with five runs, eight hits, one RBI, eight total bases, and two stolen bases along with a .320 batting average and a .320 slugging percentage. Desirae Devine has also had a strong start to the season with seven runs, eight hits, one double, four RBI, nine total bases, and three stolen bases with a .308 batting average and a .346 slugging percentage. Margaret Axelson leads the Terriers' pitching staff with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA as well as six strikeouts across 13.0 total innings pitched.
UP NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS
Upstate will remain at Cyrill Stadium to host the annual Wings Etc. Classic where Akron, Monmouth, and Kentucky will come to Spartanburg. The Spartans first game of the tournament will be Friday, Feb. 23 at 3:00 p.m. against Monmouth.
