SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate softball split day two of the Wings Etc. Classic starting with a 9-0 win in five innings against Monmouth and finishing with 7-5 loss to Akron under the lights.
Similar to day one, the Spartans dominated their opponents in game one and were able to secure the win in five innings. Maddie Drerup made her fifth start of the season in game one of the day against Monmouth and had three strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched for her third win of the season. This is the second game of the season Drerup has pitched for Upstate and didn't surrender a single run. Denver Lauer and Abby Polk had strong performances in game one with two runs, one hit, and two RBI respectively. Lauer became the first Spartan to have multiple homeruns on the season with her two RBI homerun over left field in the fourth inning. Alanna Deal and Abigail Pippen each had multi-hit performances against the Hawks as well to help Upstate advance to 7-5 overall.
In game two, the Zips of Akron University got an early jump on the Spartans with five runs in the first inning. Upstate battled to the end, bringing the game within two runs in the seventh inning, but fell just short of a comeback victory. Alyssa Kelly made her second game start of the season and had four strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched. Sierra Maness relieved Kelly in the top of the fourth and had seven strikeouts in her 4.0 innings pitched. Lauer scored her third run of the day in the third inning to get Upstate's offense going. Carson Shaw joined Lauer on the multi-homerun list with one sent over right field in the fourth. Akron scored its final run in the top of the sixth to make it a 7-2 game, but Upstate was quick to respond with two runs scored in the sixth to keep the game alive. Delorenzo scored Upstate's final run of the day for the 7-5 finish to shift to a 7-6 record. Shaw finished game two with two runs, three hits, and one RBI. Delorenzo and Amie Johnson also finished game two with two hits respectively.

Upstate will finish the Wings Etc. Classic with a rematch against ranked Kentucky, with the first pitch set for 12:30 p.m.
