SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate softball finished the Wings Etc. Classic with an 11-6 loss to #15 ranked Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.
Upstate got things started early as Carson Shaw hit her third homerun of the season over left field and brought Celeste Delorenzo home with her for a two-run lead. Kentucky got on the board with three runs in the third inning before stacking another four runs in the fourth to make the Spartans trail by five after four complete innings. Denver Lauer was able to pick the Spartans back up in the fifth as well as get her third big whack of the season with a three-RBI homerun over right center field. Shaw remained hot through the fifth inning as her single to left field scored Abby Polk and brought the game within one run with two innings to go. Despite the valiant efforts of the Spartans, the Wildcats stacked four runs in the top of the seventh to force Upstate to finish the final game of the tournament with an 11-6 loss. Shaw finished the day with one run, two hits, three RBI, and one homerun. Lauer finished the day with one run, one hit, three RBI, and one homerun.
Sierra Maness made her seventh game start of the season against the Wildcats and had four strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. Lydia Drake made her second appearance of the season to relieve Maness and pitched 3.0 innings.
UP NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS
Upstate will prepare for its second road tournament of the year in the Auburn University Tournament. The Spartans are set to take on North Texas, Northwestern, and host Auburn.
