CLEMSON, S.C. – Heading on the road for the first time this season, USC Upstate baseball fought throughout the night against No. 10 Clemson, trading the lead three times before the Tigers pulled away with runs following the seventh inning stretch Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Continuing a stretch of games slugging multiple homers, doing so for the third straight game and the sixth time this season, Upstate clubbed two home runs against Clemson, getting a two-run shot from redshirt senior centerfielder
Daniel Gernon and a solo shot redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Noah Sullivan. For both Spartans, the long balls marked their first of the season while jumpstarting multi-hit efforts, a three-hit day for Sullivan and a two-hit game for Gernon who led the way with three RBI.
Redshirt sophomore second baseman
Jake Armsey also captured a multi-hit game with a pair of singles, reaching base three total times on the night, one of three Upstate players to do so, joining Gernon (four times) and Sullivan (three times).

How It Happened
- B1: Taking advantage of a leadoff HBP, Clemson put the first runs on the scoreboard with a Blake Wright two-run homer to left.
- T2: Following a one-out double from Koby Kropf and a walk to David Pereira, Vance Sheahan extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single through the left side, scoring Kropf from second and getting a run back for Upstate.
- B2: Earning the run back for the Tigers, Will Taylor led off the second inning with a solo homer that landed just out of reach of Spartan centerfielder Daniel Gernon.
- T3: Coming on the heels of back-to-back hits from Jace Rinehart and Noah Sullivan, Kropf delivered a sac fly with runners on the corners to plate the Spartans' second run.
- T4: After seeing Jake Armsey beat the shift with a single through the right side, Gernon hit a missile out of the ballpark, his first homer of the season, to put Upstate up for the first time.
- B4: Getting a run back and tying the game, Clemson's Taylor hit his second solo shot of the night.
- T5: Tying the game for the Spartans, Noah Sullivan hammered the first pitch he saw in the fifth to deep leftfield for his first homer of the season. Upstate later loaded the bases in the inning using four free bases to push across another run with the RBI going to Gernon on an HBP.
- B5: Battling back to tie the game, the Tigers knotted things up on a two-run home run off the batter's eye from Jimmy Obertop.
- B6: Putting Clemson back on top, Taylor clubbed his third homer of the game, ringing it off the top of the batter's eye in center.
- B7: Fashioning the highest-scoring frame of the game, Clemson tallied four runs. The first coming on a groundball to first and the subsequent runs scoring via an RBI double and two-run triple.
- B8: Tacking on another tally, the Tigers pushed across a run with a single into center from Nolan Nawrocki, scoring a runner from second.
Notable
- With his second-inning RBI single, Vance Sheahan improved his career-opening hitting streak to eight games. The hitting streak is the longest by a Spartan freshman to begin his career since at least 2011 (research is ongoing; individual game-by-games not available prior to 2011).
- Jace Rinehart upped his reached base streak to 15 games with a double against the Tigers, the longest active streaks by a Spartan. The double also pushed his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest active streak by a Spartan.
- Taking three HBP Tuesday, the game marked the sixth time Upstate has worn three or more pitches in a game this season. The Spartans entered the game ranked 20th in the NCAA in the category, having been hit by 18 pitches thus far this season.
