Day One of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge Sees the Spartans Split Games Against Tarleton State and North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - USC Upstate softball split day one of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge after starting the day with a 6-5 win over Tarleton State and finishing the day with a 7-0 loss to the University of North Florida.

After two scoreless innings, Upstate was able to get on the board first as a single through the left side from Denver Lauer advanced Amie Johnson home, before Lauer was stopped at second base. With only a one run lead, the Spartans found themselves in a battle after the Texans scored four runs in the top of the fourth. Upstate was up for the challenge and finished fourth inning with a one-run lead yet again after Alanna Deal, Abigail Pippen, Taliyah Thomas, and Emily Stern all scored in the bottom of the inning. Pinch hitter Stern got Upstate's offense going as her single to right field sent Deal home and advanced both Pippen and Thomas. A sacrificed fly from Aime Johnson sent Thomas running to second and Pippen running home. Still on first, Stern took off to rob a base from Tarleton State and was successful in not only stealing second, but also distracting the Texans' defense enough for Thomas to run home. Stern came home the following play off a single up the middle hit by Abby Polk.  Trailing by one, Tarleton State continued to try to battle back and tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. The Spartans emerged victorious with a 6-5 win after a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth advanced Johnson and sent Thomas home for the game winning run.

Sierra Maness made her 10th start of the season against Tarleton State and had three strikeouts in her 4.0 innings pitched. Alyssa Kelly made her seventh appearance of the season of the season after relieving Maness in the top of the fifth inning. In her 3.0 innings pitched Kelly struck out two batters and walked away with her second win of the season.

In the final game of day one, Upstate took on the University of North Florida Ospreys. Maddie Drerup made her seventh start of the season and had one strikeout in her 5.1 innings pitched. Kelly once again was sent in to relieve the starting pitcher and surrendered no runs in her 0.2 innings pitched. The last time Kelly appeared twice in the same day was Mar. 29, 2023 against Furman.
