Spartans Begin Business Trip to Clinton with 4-2 Win Over Presbyterian Ahead of Saturday Double Header

CLINTON, S.C. – USC Upstate softball continued its winning ways, as the Spartans downed the Presbyterian Blue Hose 4-2 on Friday night, in game one of the three-game Big South series.

After a scoreless first inning for both the teams, USC Upstate got on the board in the top of the second courtesy of Cassie Norris. Norris sent a single down the right field lines that allowed Abigail Pippen to reach home from second base. The Blue Hose responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to make the game tied at one-run apiece. Both teams had a quiet third inning on offense, but it would be Upstate that once again was able to get momentum on offense. Celeste Delorenzo capitalized on stepping up to bat with the bases loaded and dinged a single up the left field line that not only advanced Alanna Deal to second but also sent Cassie Norris and Amie Johnson running for home, giving Upstate a one-run lead. Deal followed close behind Norris and Johnson, as she made her way across home plate thanks to a single to right center by Taliyah Thomas. With time running out for the hosting Blue Hose, Presbyterian was able to get one more run on the board as a double provided enough time for the Blue Hose to reach home safely. Upstate refused to let Presbyterian tie the game and came up big defensively to finish the seventh inning and walk away with the 4-2 win.

Sierra Maness made her 19th start of the season in game one of the series against the Blue Hose. Game one saw Maness throw nine strikeouts in her 7.0 innings pitched for not only her 12th win of the season, but also her 14th complete game thrown. Maness is riding an impressive seven-game win streak and helped the Spartans extend their win streak to five games, four of which have been against Big South competitors.
