CLINTON, S.C. – USC Upstate softball achieved its second Big South series sweep of the season as a pair of wins over Presbyterian College on Saturday advanced the Spartans' conference record to 10-2 and extended their win streak to seven.
Upstate began the day in dominating fashion, stacking eight runs in the top of the first. Hits from Celeste Delorenzo, Abby Polk, Cassie Norris, Abigail Polk, and Denver Lauer helped the Spartans record their opening eight runs. Presbyterian responded with one run in the bottom of the first, which would end up being its only run scored in game one. The Spartans kept their feet on the gas, posting two runs in the top of the second thanks to Polk and Pippen, both of which came in for their second runs of the game respectively. Both the third and fourth innings were quiet offensively, however the Spartans continued to hold the Blue Hose to one run through both innings. Upstate wasn't finished quite yet as the Spartans posted three final runs in the top of the fifth. Norris recorded her third hit of the day to score Abby Polk and Taliyah Thomas while Pippen's second run of the day scored Norris, and pinch hitter Darbie Lisk's first hit of the game scored Pippen. Five Spartans had a multi-hit game (Lauer, 4; Polk, 3; Norris, 3; Thomas, 2; Pippen, 2) while four Spartans had a multi-run game (Polk, 3; Pippen, 3; Norris, 2; Thomas, 2). Maddie Drerup made her 14th start of the season in game one of the day and walked away with her seventh win of the season after throwing six strikeouts in her eighth complete game.
Game two began with the Blue Hose offense getting up early as the Blue Hose scored one run in the bottom of the first. Following a quiet second inning for both teams, Upstate got on the board in the top of the third as Alanna Deal laid down a near textbook sacrificed bunt to send Denver Lauer running home for the tying run. The Spartans remained hot on offense and scored the game winning run in the top of the fourth with Cassie Norris coming home off Abigail Pippen's single to right field. Upstate remained vigilant as they neared the series sweep, making critical defensive plays to continue to deny the Blue Hose any offensive momentum. Alyssa Kelly made her fourth start of the season in game two of the day and walked away with her third win of the season after throwing a season high five strikeouts for her in her first complete game of the season.
