Upstate Volleyball: A Program on the Rise

In 2023, the Spartans jumped out to their strongest start since 2015, boasting a 4-1 record early in the season. Ultimately, they concluded the year at 12-14 (5-9). A big improvement over the prior year. It wasn't a tale of new recruits, revamped facilities, or altered team dynamics. The players, as did the facilities, colors, and jersey numbers, remained the same. The only notable change?
Coach Ali Skayhan.
The transition wasn't a massive relocation; in fact, it merely added ten minutes to her daily commute. Coming from her role as an assistant coach at Wofford, Skayhan was enthusiastic about the opportunity.
"We retained nearly every player, and as a coaching staff, our focus was on instilling in them the belief in their capabilities to compete at this level," remarked Skayhan. "We've only just begun to tap into our potential."Â

Much of Coach Skayhan's coaching philosophy traces back to her collegiate playing days at Florida Southern. Despite receiving numerous offers, she didn't feel at home until she set foot on the campus in Lakeland. "I knew immediately that this was where I belonged. I was fully committed then, and that sentiment continues as I stay connected with my former teammates, coaches, and friends."
It's often said that players reflect their coaches' personality and ethos, which is true for the Upstate volleyball program.
They're all in.
"Our players genuinely embrace Spartanburg; they love it here and root for each other's success," emphasized Skayhan. "They're not just teammates; they're like family. They know my and my assistant's families, and camaraderie is our program's cornerstone. I trust them, even with my daughter."Â
Skayhan's journey is one of both a former student-athlete and a professional player who competed overseas in Hungary and Germany. Reflecting on her path in a well-respected European league, Skayhan chuckled, "It was a privilege and a great experience to represent division two in the Bundeslinga!"Â
As the Spartans begin spring practices and gear up for the 2024 season, Coach Skayhan emphasizes the importance of fearlessness and continual improvement. She also emphasizes the importance of discovering individual rhythm and voices within the team.
"I was fortunate to be mentored by exceptional female leaders who encouraged me to be authentic. Their leadership allowed me to evolve both personally and athletically, and that's what I aspire for our players here."
Coach Skayhan also highlighted the significant contributions of several players.
"Kayla Spangler, Ady O'Grady, and Ashleigh Nicoll have all elevated their game," Skayhan stated, radiating with pride.
Furthermore, Coach Skayhan emphasized Alona Clinansmith's remarkable progress. "Alona has made tremendous strides. She's the epitome of a team player. She's that athlete that puts in the time to get better, while having the right attitude. She's an example for all of our young players moving forward."
"Our liberos, Julia Gladhill and Caroline Cleveland, are leaders both on and off the court. Their competitiveness elevates the entire team," added Skayhan.Â
Coach went on to emphasize the importance of the spring season for a program still in transition. "In the fall, you're mainly prepping; it's two timeouts and you're done. The spring allows us to slow down and focus on training at a higher level."
Off the court, Coach Skayhan is committed to advancing the program. "I'm proud of (assistant coach) Justin (Sanders), he has been a tremendous help. Our recruiting efforts have gained significant traction. This program is poised for success. We're transitioning from recruits asking 'What is Upstate?' to knowing who we are and wanting to be a part of it."
One thing remains constant in this equation: Coach Ali Skayhan.
